Lee Dae Hoon: Early Life & Education

As a toddler, the Seoul native Lee started his taekwondo journey at his father’s dojang (dojo). His father, a practitioner in his own, ran a taekwondo gym which became the tiny Lee Dae Hoon’s playground.

Instead of going to kindergarten, he got his child care at his parent’s taekwondo academy. Thus he learned Taekwondo naturally, starting at the age of three or four years old.

Lee believes that running around the academy made him strengthen his physical stamina and was ahead of others at his age. In addition, through growing up with Taekwondo, his love for it grew immensely.

As both of his parents worked there in the academy (dojang), he used to run around there from first class to last class.

Since he was physically strong, he would show his talent more to the parents as he was aware of being good at Taekwondo.

Thus, longevity and genetics were two major elements for Lee Dae Hoon, for which he was born into the game. 

Before Fame

While Lee was in the third grade of elementary school, he competed for the first time. Not only did he compete, but the athlete also won the game.

From this very moment, Lee’s career in Taekwondo began. In addition to that, his family was very supportive of his decision and looked after him to become the best.

Once Lee admitted that he would have been on some other sports if he was not a taekwondo player but never an office worker.

Lee Dae Hoon later attended Seoul’s Yongin University to study Sport, Leisure & Culture and started playing Taekwondo professionally.

Hoon then made his international debut at the 2011 World Taekwondo Olympic Qualification Tournament in Baku. After that, he won gold at the Gyeongju Asian Games in the same year, which rose to the biggest stage.

At the London Olympics, as a member of Team Korea, Lee Dae Hoon won silver. But, unfortunately, Spain’s Joel Gonzalez beat him in gold.

Likewise, in 2014, he won gold in Asian Games Incheon and Asian Championship gold. 

Again in 2015, he took Grand Prix silver in Moscow, gold in both Manchester and Mexico City, and bronze in Samsun.

Lee participated in the 2016 Rio Olympics in his natural weight at -68 kg and won bronze.

Two-times Taekwondo Olympic Medalist Lee Dae Hoon announced his retirement after losing in the men’s 68 kg bronze medal match at the Tokyo Olympics. Only a moment after the crushing loss, Lee called it to quit.

Lee Dae Hoon, who played at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games at Makuhari Messe Hall A on July 25, 2020, failed to obtain a medal.

Contrary to people’s high expectations, Lee Dae Hoon was shocked by this defeat. Moreover, he expected a gold medal, this time in Olympics.

He felt sorry for everyone who supported him and wanted to stop doing that for the sake of the young generation. Lee had been playing for the national team for the past 12 years, which is outstanding.

He is taking an integrated master’s and doctoral course in physical education at Sejong University. And learning theoretically what he did himself.

Ultimately, Lee believes a good leader is a leader who is good at communication. So he is now on the path to becoming the best coach.

While he was playing, he was only training and changing techniques. Now he wants to create a player who goes beyond the level he was on.
