Recently, the mother of a Lexington High School basketball player, Deana Lee, shared a Facebook post describing her son facing racism and staff not taking action

Her post was in response to repeated incidents of racial slurs directed at her son while he was in class.

Deana Lee’s son, Keegen, is a freshman and a dedicated basketball player at the school.

In her post, she emphasized the need for accountability not only from the schools but also from parents who influence such behavior at home.

Mother Stands Up for Her Son as High School Dismisses Complaints and Fails to Take Action Against Racial Slurs!

On December 9, Deana Lee shared a post where she explained that when the incidents occurred, school staff failed to notify her.

In fact, she only learned about the most recent incident from her son after a basketball game.

She also noted that the school reportedly dismissed the severity of the slur because it was “read from a phone message,”.

The school also claimed that it should not have felt offensive, despite Keegen being one of the few students of color in the class.

According to Lexington High School’s handbook, racial slurs are classified as a level 2 offense, which results in minor consequences such as a conversation or a short lunch detention.

In contrast, more serious offenses like cheating on a test or possession of a vape are treated as level 3 offenses, potentially leading to suspension.

Deana criticized this policy, calling it embarrassing and dismissive of diversity and equality.

In her post, Deana emphasized that her son is respectful, kind, and academically focused.

She expressed frustration that despite her family’s contributions to the school through athletics and respect for programs, her children’s safety and dignity are not fully protected.

After her post was shared, many commenters expressed their support for Lee. One user praised her for standing up, saying;

Oh that ticks me off so bad!!! I am SO sorry you’re dealing with this, and I stand with you on spreading the word and getting this message out in the open!! Lunch detention? What a joke! Lexington High School….it’s not just parents, you need to do better, too! Protect your students and let others know this behavior will not be tolerated!!

Following her initial post, Deana Lee shared another update on December 10, reporting that the superintendent of Lexington High School reached out to her directly

According to her post, he expressed anger and concern over the repeated racial incidents in the classrooms.

Deana added that a re-evaluation of the student handbook is already underway to increase the consequences for using racial slurs.

She also noted that other steps were discussed, including improved education for both staff and students, and expressed hope that these changes are already in motion.

Deana emphasized that this is not a minor issue or a case of “kids being kids.”

She remains determined to see meaningful change, stating she will continue advocating until the situation is properly addressed and her son and other students are protected.
