Susan Jane Hilton, a Harrison County Schools teacher, passed away at the age of 76 at J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital on Wednesday, August 13, 2025.
She dedicated many years to teaching and mentorship, leaving a lasting legacy.
Hilton was a graduate of Victory High School and earned her bachelor’s degree at Fairmont State College. She laid the foundation for a life of learning and service.
After graduation, she dedicated herself to the students of Harrison County for many years and retired after a fulfilling career as both a teacher and a volleyball coach.
Her passion for mentorship left a lasting mark on the halls of both Salem and Liberty schools, where she was an inspiration to her students.
Beyond the classroom, Hilton was a woman of faith and fellowship. She was a longtime and devoted member of the Adamston United Methodist Church.
Her story is of dedication, community, and the profound impact one person can have on the lives of countless others. Undoubtedly, her tragic passing saddened the whole community, and many remembered her in their heartfelt tribute.

Susan Jane Hilton, the daughter of James Mason Hilton and Marjorie Mae Ashcraft Hilton, was born on August 23, 1948, in Clarksburg, West Virginia.
Her life was a beautiful tapestry woven with threads of love, friendship, and unwavering community spirit.
Hilton left behind a legacy of joy and connection that will be cherished by all who knew her.
She was a devoted sister and aunt, whose family was the cornerstone of her life.
Her loving brother, Thomas Ralph Hilton, and his wife, Diantha Kaye, along with her adored nieces and nephews, Amanda Kaye Hilton, John Thomas Hilton, Patty Hilton, and Debbie Herrmann, survived her.
She also shared a close bond with her extended family members and countless friends who were considered family.
Moreover, her parents, brother, James David Hilton, and nephew, Jimmy Dave Hilton, preceded her in death.
Hilton’s vibrant spirit shone brightest in the company of others. She found immense joy in socializing with her wide circle of friends and beloved family.
She loved going to Tammy’s Hair Salon regularly, where she made friends and had lively conversations that made her day.
Furthermore, she will be remembered as a pillar of her educational community, a faithful friend, and a woman who found joy in the beautiful moments of connection.
One of the best! Not long ago, I was talking about diagramming a sentence and how disappointed she would be in me for not remembering it correctly! 🤣 she could catch me chewing gum in class when I thought I was being so sneaky. Was a great Volleyball coach and just an overall awesome person, you guys are spot on. She was feisty but loved us kids. I remember going to her house and visiting with her momma too, Margie Mae, sharing the same middle name made Ms. Hilton ALWAYS call me Maggie Mae so she could get my attention just like my mom!!! Wow what a flood of good childhood memories. Ms. Hilton will certainly be missed but not forgotten!

Hilton will be laid to rest next to her parents in a private interment, which will be held at Shinnston Memorial Cemetery.
