When longtime Rockledge City Councilman, educator, and Brevard County leader Dr. Joe Lee Smith passed away on September 1, 2025, at age 89, he left behind not only a remarkable public legacy but also a deeply personal one anchored by his wife of 63 years, Altamese Edmonson Smith.

Dr. Smith married Altamese Edmonson in the early 1960s, beginning a union that lasted more than six decades.

Their marriage became one of the most enduring partnerships in Brevard County.

Altamese stood beside her husband throughout his distinguished career in education, politics, and civic service, providing the steady foundation that allowed him to serve the community so effectively.

Their partnership reflected mutual respect and commitment, with Altamese offering unwavering support during his 36 years on the Rockledge City Council, his years as provost of multiple Eastern Florida State College campuses, and his countless civic responsibilities.

Altamese, a Brevard County native, was described as a devoted wife and mother who valued both family and community.

Though she remained largely private, her role in her husband’s success was undeniable.

She managed the demands of family life while allowing her husband the freedom to dedicate himself fully to public service.

The couple’s relationship became an example of stability and strength, admired across the community.

Friends and colleagues often spoke of their marriage as one rooted in faith, service, and love.

Together, the Smiths built a close-knit family deeply tied to Brevard County.

Dr. Smith is survived by Altamese, their two children, two grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

The family also endured personal tragedy, having lost one child and one grandchild.

One of their daughters, Trina Smith Lawton, passed away after a battle with illness.

She was a graduate of Rockledge High School and Brevard Community College, continuing the family’s legacy in local education.

Despite such hardships, Altamese and Dr. Smith remained resilient, holding firmly to their faith and commitment to family.

Faith and service guided much of the couple’s life together. Dr. Smith served as a Sunday School Teacher Emeritus, participated on usher boards, and mentored youth, roles that reflected the shared values he and Altamese instilled in their family.

Altamese’s quiet but enduring presence supported these efforts, ensuring their household remained a source of strength and encouragement.

While Dr. Joe Lee Smith will be remembered for his achievements as an educator, leader, and community builder, his marriage to Altamese Edmonson Smith stands as a vital part of his legacy.

Their 63-year union showcased love, resilience, and dedication not only to each other but also to their community.

Altamese’s unwavering support allowed Dr. Smith to break barriers, mentor generations, and serve with integrity.

Together, they represented the values of faith, family, and service—values that will continue to inspire Brevard County long after his passing.
