Bob Walsh, the most decorated and beloved boys basketball coach in Lorain County history, passed away on June 28, 2025, at the age of 87.

His influence on the game and on the lives of the people he coached will echo through gyms, communities, and memories for decades to come.

In a remarkable 42-year career, Walsh amassed an astonishing 643 career wins across five area high schools, leaving a legacy of championships, mentorship, and selfless leadership.

He remains the only coach to lead two Lorain County boys teams, Clearview (1974) and Oberlin (1986), to state titles, a feat unmatched in local history.

Bob Walsh Leaves Behind A Great Legacy In Ohio Basketball

Walsh was more than just a coach; he was a builder of young men.

His former point guard on Clearview’s 1974 championship team, John Szalay, said,

“He had a tremendous impact on countless kids. He gave confidence to kids who didn’t have much going for them and taught them to do things the right way.”

Whether it was instilling discipline, teaching defense, or simply believing in a struggling teen, Walsh had a rare gift.

He didn’t just develop athletes; he developed leaders, many of whom would go on to coach their own teams with the same values and tenacity.

He holds the record as Lorain County’s all-time winningest boys basketball coach and ranks 11th all-time in the state of Ohio.

His coaching philosophy was simple but powerful:

“To have success, you must have complete team effort from the bottom to the top. Every player must understand his role. You must surround yourself with good assistant coaches and trust them.”

He played a pivotal role in forming the Lorain County Basketball Coaches Association (LCBCA) and remained deeply active in the local basketball community throughout his life.

Bob Walsh Joins His Beloved Wife Maureen

Bob was married to the love of his life, wife Maureen, for 45 years until her passing.

Together, they raised two children: R. Michael Walsh, who followed in his father’s footsteps as a teacher and coach at Elyria High, and Christen Piedmont, a former coach herself.

Bob was also a proud grandfather to Michael, Mickenzie, and Ryan.

A lifelong member of the Sheffield Lions Club and the Knights of Columbus #637, Bob’s dedication to community and service extended far beyond basketball.
