Los Angeles Dodgers Tommy Edman Is of Multi Ethnic Background With Caucasian and Korean Lineage

This article was last updated by on

Tommy Edman runs alongside cultures and identities, hitting home runs on the field and in life, all while juggling the rich legacies of his Korean and Caucasian heritage.

Tommy Edman is an accomplished professional baseball player representing the Los Angeles Dodgers in the MLB.

He honed his skills at Stanford University before being drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in 2016.

The Dodgers’ superstar has a diverse family background, as diverse as his baseball career from college.

Despite coming from a complex familial heritage and ethnic background, he is connected to his roots.

The multicultural background has played a significant role in shaping Edman’s identity on and off the field.

Tommy Edman Embraces His Multi-Ethnic Roots Inherited From His Caucasian Father and Korean Mother on Global Stage!

Tommy Edman was born on May 19, 1995, in Pontiac, Michigan, to parents of mixed ethnicity and background.

He is of Korean descent, inherited from his mother, Maureen Kwak, who is of South Korean origin. On the other hand, Edman has Caucasian roots from his father’s side, John Edman Jr.

Tommy’s father, who helped in his initial days, was his coach before transitioning into professional baseball.

His mother, Maureen, immigrated to the United States from South Korea as a child, where later she gave birth to Tommy and raised him.

She married John Edman Jr., who is of European heritage. This makes Edman half-Korean, half-Caucasian, and American by birth.

After moving to the United States, Tommy’s mother pursued her education at Williams College.

Maureen is a medical professional at Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego. While she works in the medical sector, her husband, John, is a La Jolla Country Day School baseball coach.

His father, John Edman Jr., played collegiate baseball at Williams College and coached Tommy to shape him.

Tommy plays for the St. Louis Cardinals in Major League Baseball and has represented South Korea in WBC.

His decision to play for Korea stems from his mother’s heritage, as she was born there.

Under WBC eligibility rules, players can represent a country if they have a parent or grandparent born there, even if they were not born in that country.

This rule allowed Tommy to embrace his Korean roots while showcasing his talent on an international stage.

Despite being born and raised in the United States, Tommy’s deliberate choice to play for Korea has sparked talks among Americans.

However, he considers the opportunity to represent his mother’s nation as nothing but a ‘huge blessing and honor.’

Tommy’s involvement also reflects a trend where athletes with multicultural backgrounds can pay homage to lineage in global events.
