2023 has been a good year for the Belgian snooker player Luca Brecel. He became the first player from continental Europe to become the World Champion and won £500,000 as the prize money.
In the recent Shanghai Masters Tournament, Brecel came up against Ronnie O’Sullivan. But instead of taking £200,000 home, Luca had to settle for £100,000 after Sullivan defeated him 11-9.

Brecel started his professional journey in 2011 and has achieved massive success in the sport since then. But it wasn’t always rosy.
During his first few years, Luca made below 25k in prize money while participating in various competitions. And though he had started to beat big names, money wasn’t the easiest thing to come by.
His earnings started to increase in 2015. That year, he made £58k, with the major earning being the Welsh Open tournament, in which he reached the semi-finals before being beaten by John Higgins.
Luca’s career earnings soared in 2017 as he won his first ranking title, China Championship. Brecel earned a cool £150,000 and took home a total earning of £318,430 that season.
In 2019, Brecel didn’t have the best year, with his rank dropping, and so did his earnings. But since 2021, his career earnings have only gone upwards.

Brecel is also known for his lavish lifestyle, which he flaunts on his Instagram handle. Last month, Luca and his girlfriend enjoyed a romantic vacation in Hong Kong, with him sharing a couple of snaps of them on an event boat.

Luca Brecel’s parents, Carlo and Mirella Brecel raised the snooker player and his sister in Dilsen-Stokkem, Belgium.
The 2023 Snooker World Champion credits his father for introducing him to snooker. He started playing at age nine when he and his father found a snooker table during a family trip.
The Belgian was homeschooled after his parents noticed his snooker talent. His father is a hail hunter and is pretty much active on Facebook.
Luca is currently in a relationship with Laura Vanoverberghe, and the two have already moved in despite having started to date earlier this year.
He was previously in a long-term relationship with Gaelle Dept, but the two went their separate ways at the end of 2022.
