Tom Gault, a former Mammoth High School head football coach and longtime resident of Mammoth Lakes, California, passed away on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, leaving his family and loved ones devastated.
While the details regarding the actual cause of his death are not yet available, the whole Mammoth Lakes community is mourning the loss of their beloved resident and football coach, Tom Gault.
Tom Gault served as the head football coach of Mammoth High School for over three decades and led his team to several victories.
For his dedication to students and athletes at Mammoth High School for over 35 years, Gault was presented with a Lifetime Achievement award in October 2023.
Furthemore, many of his students and loved ones are paying tribute to the late Tom and extending their heartfelt condolences to his family during this difficult time.

Tom Gault was not just known for his amazing coaching skills but also touched the hearts of many with his exceptional music journey.
He was a great guitarist and singer, having played for over 40 years. Tom Gault also established a Garage Band Good Livin with Jim Lambert.
Furthermore, Tom Gault and his friend, the late Jim Lambert, were also part of the retro rock and roll band Flashback, which played in and around Mammoth for about three decades.
They also played at the Tioga Gas Mart in 1996 as Flashback and as Good Livin’ (for Gault and Lambert).
The late Tom Gault Began His Coaching Journey In the Early 1980s
The late Tom Gault joined the Mammoth High School football team, the Huskies, as the head coach in the early 1980s.
While not much is known about his early career, Tom Gault carved out a legacy as the longtime head football coach at Mammoth High School, guiding the Huskies through numerous challenging seasons in the Desert Mountain League.
During his 2004-05 season, Gault consistently led the team in several victories, posting a 5-6 record, including a solid 301 league performance.
Under his leadership, the team improved significantly in 2007-08, achieving a strong 7-5 overall record and going undefeated (4-0) in league play.
Similarly, across multiple seasons, Gault’s coaching helped Mammoth High earn competitive rankings within the state and section, including a top-300 section rank in both 2004-05 and 2007-08.
Despite facing tougher seasons such as 2006-07 and 2008-09, Gault remained committed, building a reputation as a passionate mentor.
After a brief one-year hiatus, he returned to the sidelines for the 2010-11 season, reaffirming his dedication to the program.
Known for his coaching and musical talent, Tom Gault left a lasting impression both on and off the field. His contribution to the community will always be remembered.
