It was around 3:30 a.m., when most people were still asleep, but on Atlantic Avenue, a vehicle driven by Oscar Galante struck 13-year-old Savannah Gatchell.

The impact was fatal, resulting in Savannah’s death at the scene despite the quick response from emergency crews, while Oscar, who was behind the wheel, sustained injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Authorities soon arrested Oscar and charged him with operating under the influence, believing alcohol played a role in the crash.

The Marblehead Police Department and Massachusetts State Police are still investigating because both Oscar and Savannah are juveniles; officials have released few details.

The Essex County District Attorney’s Office echoed this, saying more information isn’t available yet.

If anyone saw what happened or has tips, police ask them to call Detective Sgt. Sean Brady at the Marblehead Police Department. Even small details could help piece together the full story.

At 5’8″ tall, he wears jersey number 19, bringing energy and skill to every game.

Oscar’s life has been shaped by unimaginable loss long before the recent disaster.

But Oscar’s life has seen tragedy before, when three years ago, on March 18, 2022, he lost his older brother, James Galante.

James, who was just 18, died in a single-car crash on the Ocean Avenue causeway in Marblehead.

Rescue teams treated James at the scene and took him to the hospital, but his injuries were too severe and he passed away that same day.

James was a senior at Marblehead High School, much like Oscar is now, and was passionate about football and had helped lead his team to a Super Bowl victory in 2021.

Committed to Denison University, James planned to play college ball and study physics, but his death left a hole in the community.

Schools across the North Shore sent condolences, and his father thanked the town for their kindness, but now, this new tragedy piles more pain on the Galante family.

It’s hard to imagine the weight they carry, losing one son, and now another facing such serious trouble.

Savannah Gatchell, at just 13 years old, made a lasting impression on everyone around her. She was the kind of girl with a huge heart, always putting others first.

Savannah was the person you turned to when sad or stressed. She listened. She brought comfort.

Even so young, Savannah overflowed with life, light, and joy, and touched countless people in Marblehead, friends, family, and neighbors.

Her smile could brighten a room, and her kindness made the world a little softer, but losing her has devastated those who loved her. Her parents, siblings, and friends are heartbroken, suffering with a void that feels impossible to fill.

Friends remember her laughter, her empathy, the way she made ordinary days special. She’s not just a victim in a news story; she was a daughter, a sister, a friend who brought warmth to those around her.

To help Savannah’s family, a GoFundMe page has been set up to help Savannah’s family through this nightmare. Organized by Hayden Sozanski, the goal is $28,000.

The money will cover funeral and memorial costs, plus support for her loved ones as they grieve and Every donation, big or small, honors Savannah’s memory and reminds her family they’re not alone.

The fundraiser’s page celebrates Savannah as a deeply caring soul, inspiring community donations and stories, while calls for justice and plans for vigils show the fragility of life.

This accident has sparked talks about road safety, teen drinking, and the dangers of driving impaired. It’s a wake-up call for parents, kids, and the whole town.
