Marcos Maidana ethnicity has confused many boxing fans for years. Some believe the former boxer has Chinese ancestry, and some believe he has Native Indian blood.
The boxer has stated he comes from an indigenous background but hasn’t clearly stated whether there’s any truth of him coming from Chinese ancestry. Some fans concluded that he had Chinese heritage due to his nickname “El Chino,” which translates into The Chinaman.

But the boxer has said it was due to his looks that he received the nickname from his friends. In the past, Maidana has also doubled down from removing the nickname.
Since retiring in 2016, Maidana had hinted he would want to return to the ring, but the comeback doesn’t seem possible anymore. Earlier this year, he was seen in Dubai attending a boxing event and came face-to-face with his former rival Floyd Mayweather.
Marcos Maidana Ethnicity
Marcos Maidana’s ethnicity has always been a confusion among his fans. The former professional boxer has previously stated he has indigenous roots.
A kid who grew up in Santa Fe, Argentina, Marcos Maidana began his boxing career in 2004. During his time as a professional boxer, Maidana’s nickname was El Chino or The Chinaman.
Maidana said it was his friends who gave him the nickname and that he won’t change it despite a few taking offense to it. Marcos also said it was because of his supposed Asian-like features he received the nickname.

But does he really have any Asian descent? In a boxing forum back in 2014, a huge conundrum among his fans arose about his ethnicity. One fan even went as far as to say Maidana was Chinese.
But this is simply not true. A few fans pointed out that Marcos is neither Chinese nor Asian but is a Latino Argentinian with native Indian blood.
An article in 2014 by Alex McClintock pointed out that Maidana’s nickname was racist but said it wasn’t an uncommon nickname in Latin America. The article did get crusaded in Reddit, and the writer was considered soft for saying the nickname was racist.
In the end, we believe Marcos Maidana’s roots might be connected to native Indian ancestry.
