Mark Fetting, a former CEO of Legg Mason, passed away at the age of 70 after a heart attack on Saturday morning, August 9, 2025.

He was married to Georgia “Georgie” Smith, and they have three children, Conor, Carey, and Noel.

Mark R. Fetting was a prominent figure in the financial services industry, known for his leadership at Legg Mason and his dedication to public service.

He has played a pivotal role in the firm’s strategic growth as the executive overseeing Legg Mason’s global mutual fund and managed account businesses. He helped in the acquisitions of Citigroup Asset Management and Permal.

Before joining Legg Mason in 2000, Fetting held key positions at Prudential Financial Group, where he served as president of Retirement Services and helped transform the company’s money management operations.

His career also includes leadership roles at Greenwich Associates and T. Rowe Price, as well as early experience in commercial lending at Citibank.

Moreover, he was involved in political campaigns, educational initiatives, and youth programs, including founding roles with The Fund for Educational Excellence and Project Raise.

Mark Fetting’s Legacy of Resilience Lives On Even Though Heart Attack Cut His Life Short

Mark R. Fetting, the son of John “Jack” H. Fetting Jr. and the former Mary Angela Lacy, was born on November 23, 1954.

His parents raised him in a close-knit family alongside his four siblings.

Mark was a man of unwavering dedication to his family, work, and principles. His final days were spent as he lived fully present, surrounded by those he loved.

He reveled in the joy of family at a Lakeside home in New Hampshire, spending time with his three children and five grandchildren, all under 12.

He delighted in doing cannonballs off the dock, laughing with the little ones, and making memories during a weeklong family gathering.

Tragically, on a Saturday morning, just after playing in the yard with his grandchildren, Mark suffered a fatal heart attack. His sudden passing left a profound void, but his legacy of resilience and love endures.

Mark was a man of relentless energy and never slowed down. He lived by an unshakable moral compass and poured his heart into everything he did.

One of his proudest achievements was managing Beverly Byron’s successful 1978 Congressional campaign after the death of her husband, U.S. Rep. Goodloe Byron.

Furthermore, his determination extended to personal challenges, too. Two decades ago, he completed the first Baltimore Marathon despite passing two kidney stones during training and battling a third during the race itself.

When his wife, Georgia “Georgie” Smith, asked if he was okay, he urged her, “It’s fine. Just keep going.”

Mark Fetting was steadfast, courageous, and always moving forward. He leaves behind a family who adored him, a community that respected him, and a life well-lived.

He will be deeply missed but never forgotten. Rest In Peace, Champion of Baltimore.

Mark’s devotion to Georgie began in their teenage years when they met at a basement party at 15. Smith described it as love at first sight.

They were so committed that it was just a question of time until Mark made it official after lying to a landlady about being engaged to get their first house together.

They married in 1979 in her mother’s Baltimore backyard on Brightside Road.

Georgie has loved him every day of her life, and it was a pretty nice thing to have in life.

Furthermore, Mark’s children remember him as their loudest cheerleader, whether at Carey’s field hockey games, their swimming competitions, or simply in everyday life.

Conor recalled with a laugh, remembering how he felt embarrassed that his father cheered louder than the other parents.

Mark’s most incredible legacy was his unconditional love and support for Conor when he came out as a gay man.

My dad wasn’t the kind of dad that needed you to be some idea of what a man is. He loved us for who we were.
