Ernest Torain Sr., a Baltimore native and former football star, passed away on Thursday, July 31, 2025, at the age of 80.

According to his obituary page, Ernest Torain Sr. passed away of natural causes at his house in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

Born in Baltimore, Maryland, on May 31, 1945, Ernest Torain Sr. was an exceptional athlete who won the hearts of many with his amazing football skills.

Ernest began his football journey from a very young age, and during his high school years, he won several national-level championships, leading his team to several victories.

Similarly, Ernest Sr. continued his football journey while attending Baltimore Polytechnic Institute, later joining the University of Maryland.

As a standout running back for the Maryland Terrapins, Ernest led his team in several victories, becoming the team’s leading rusher in 1965.

While Ernest Torain Sr. didn’t continue his football career after graduating from the University of Maryland, he continued to touch the lives of many with his contributions to the community.

After college, Ernest worked for Buxton, Inc. as a salesman later becoming sales executive.

The death of Ernest Torain Sr. has left a profound void in the lives of his family, friends, and loved ones.

Ernest Torain Sr. is survived by his son, Ernest Torain Jr. (Karin) of Evanston, Illinois, three siblings, Mitchell, Valerie (Myron) and Wanda Hoplins, sister-in-law, Rev. Dr. Novella Crudup of Capitol Heights, Maryland, daughter-in-law, Thewantha Torain of Swedesboro, New Jersey, granddaughters, Nadia Shirk (Toren) of Missoula, Montana, Peyton Torian of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Kennedy Torain of New York, grandson, Ernest Torain III of Boston and Ethan Torain of Evanston, Illinois.

Ernest Torain Sr. Was Preceded in Death By His Beloved Wife, Elaine, and Son Erick

The former Maryland Terrapins football star, Ernest Torain Sr., reunites in heaven with his longtime wife of nearly six decades, Elaine Torain, and their youngest son, Erick Torain.

The late couple, Ernest Sr. and Elaine, first met at the age of 15 and married on June 19, 1965, in Baltimore, Maryland.

Furthermore, N. Elaine Torain, born on July 18, 1945, in Norfolk, Virginia, passed away on Saturday, March 16, 2024, at the age of 78, surrounded by her beloved husband, Ernest Sr., two sons, Erick and Ernie, and the whole family.

Elaine, a proud alumna of Notre Dame, founded the first-ever computer training course at the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission and worked as the lead Technical Trainer for the Pennsylvania Turnpike until her retirement.

Likewise, months after losing his longtime wife, the late Ernest Sr. lost his youngest son, Erick Torain, who passed away at his home in Swedesboro, New Jersey, on July 30, 2024, at the age of 55.

Erick followed in the footsteps of his father, Ernest Torain Sr., and played football as a talented running back at Bishop McDevitt High School and Leigh University.

The late Erick later pursued his career as a successful businessman and finance officer. He worked in serveral renowed companies including RBC Capital Markets, First Albany Corp. before fouding his own companies.

Erick also successfully raised over $50 million in financings for New Jersey Charter Schools.
