Meet George and Ida Johnson, the Family That Raised New Orleans Star Juwan Johnson

This article was last updated by on

Juwan Johnson, the American professional football tight end for the New Orleans Saints, was born to his parents, George Johnson Sr. and Ida Tolbert-Johnson, on September 13, 1995, in Stratford, New Jersey.

He grew up in a close-knit family with his two older brothers, Darreus and George Jr., the latter of whom also plays for the Saints as a defensive end.

From the beginning, family has been at the heart of Juwan’s journey, shaping the man and athlete he has become.

Juwan’s father, George, played a crucial role in teaching him perseverance and determination. George often told Juwan, “Whatever you start, you have to finish.”

These words guided him through both the challenges and successes of his football career.

Tragically, Juwan’s father, George passed away after suffering a heart attack, following more than three years of battling the effects of a stroke caused by diabetes.

His loss was a devastating moment for Juwan, yet it also became a testament to his resilience and dedication.

Only two days after his father’s funeral, Juwan flew across the country to Eugene, Oregon, to enroll as a graduate transfer at the University of Oregon.

Less than a week later, he was on the field participating in spring practice. Oregon coach Mario Cristobal praised him, saying:

Not many people can handle and manage all that and he has. He’s a guy of strong faith. He really loves his family, he loves his teammates, and he deserves all the credit in the world.

Juwan’s mother, Ida Tolbert-Johnson, has always been a source of love and support.

She has spent more than 20 years working with children with disabilities, showing compassion and strength that deeply influenced her sons.

In 2019, on Mother’s Day, Juwan shared a heartfelt message on Instagram.

Ida has also emphasized the importance of family support. She said:

Juwan had our support, and he knew he had his brothers’ support. We always spend the holidays together as much as possible.

Her guidance, along with George’s lessons, gave Juwan the strength to face life’s challenges with courage and faith.

Juwan Johnson’s story is not just about athletic talent. It’s about the love, guidance, and unwavering support of his parents, George and Ida.

Their values and care helped shape a young man who stands strong, cherishes family, and continues to inspire both on and off the field.
