Mikel McDaniel, 42, the head coach of the Miami Dolphins, says he is proud of his ethnicity and background, and first and foremost identifies as a human being.
The coach was born on March 6, 1983, in Aurora, Colorado. McDaniel is of mixed race. Mkel’s late father, whose name has not been disclosed publicly, was black, while her mother, Donna, is white.
Mikel reportedly had “a different experience” growing up in a predominantly white society.
“It is a unique experience, being a race and then fully acknowledging that most outside observers, when they perceive you, they identify you as something other than the race you are. When you’re younger and that is happening, it’s very, very confusing,” said McDaniel.
When asked about his backstory, when he was hired as the head coach in 2022, McDaniel said;
It’s weird that it comes up because I’ve just tried to be a good person, and I think my background opens my eyes a little bit. I don’t have any real experience with racism. But I know my mom experienced it when she married my dad. I know my dad experienced it and that it’s in my family. I guess that makes me a human being that can identify with other people’s problems.”
As a kid, McDaniel noticed early on that he was different. His friends weren’t always allowed to spend the night at his house, and some relatives looked down on his mother for marrying a Black man.
In an interview, he also mentioned a visit to his paternal grandmother’s house when he was pretty young, and noticed that his skin didn’t match anyone in the family photos.
This led to a different experience for the coach, and he finally understood why the community sees him differently, and what it’s like to be biracial and grow up in two completely different cultures.
But it didn’t stop him from being a successful coach in the future. He has worked his way up through different NFL roles with the Houston Texans, Washington Football Team, Cleveland Browns, and San Francisco 49ers, as well.
