Mikael Ymer Suspended For 18 Months

Mikael Ymer, a 24-year-old Swedish tennis player ranked No. 51 in the world, has been suspended from professional tennis for 18 months following a successful appeal by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

Ymer had initially been cleared of three whereabouts failures, which are considered potential anti-doping rule violations.

Ymer stated that he had been charged with the violations in January 2022 for missing three out-of-competition test attempts within a 12-month period.

He had contested the charges in a hearing and was cleared by an independent tribunal in June 2022.

However, the ITF appealed the decision, leading to the CAS partially upholding the appeal and imposing an 18-month suspension.

Expressing his disagreement with the decision, Ymer took to Twitter, emphasizing that he believed he did not commit the third offense and found the decision to try him again and find him guilty unfair.

He also expressed surprise at the severity of the 18-month suspension, considering his innocence.

The CAS clarified that Ymer had accepted the first two whereabouts failures but contested the third, which was attributed to miscommunication with his agent.

The panel concluded that Ymer failed to ensure compliance with anti-doping regulations by neglecting to verify his whereabouts filing and assuming it would be corrected by his agent or tennis authorities.

Despite the suspension, Ymer recently achieved success at Wimbledon, reaching the tournament’s third round after defeating the ninth seed, Taylor Fritz.
