Mike Sherman, a top sports journalist, is now the first innovator-in-residence at OU Student Media.

While his professional achievements are well-documented, less is known about his personal life, particularly his wife, Cathleen, who stands quietly by his side as he continues to shape the future of journalism.

Mike Sherman’s Journey in Journalism is Nothing Short of Inspiring

A graduate of the University of Central Oklahoma, Sherman has built a reputation as a mentor and leader in the field.

From 2003 to 2016, he served as the sports editor at The Oklahoman, where he led a sports department that earned national acclaim for its storytelling and investigative work.

His leadership didn’t stop there. Sherman also held the role of sports editor at The Observer-Dispatch in Utica, New York, from 1994 to 1997, before moving to the Tampa Bay Times in 2016.

His influence extended further as president of the Associated Press Sports Editors (APSE) from 2014 to 2015, a testament to his standing in the industry.

In 2023, Sherman took on a new challenge as director of content for Sellout Crowd, a sports media venture that showcases his knack for innovation.

Now, at OU Student Media, he’s bringing his expertise to the OU Daily, the independent, student-run newspaper at the University of Oklahoma.

Starting this fall, Sherman will mentor students weekly, helping them elevate their work and prepare for careers in journalism.

His mission is clear: to inspire the next generation of storytellers while continuing to push the boundaries of sports media.

Life with Cathleen and Their Family

Behind every great journalist is a supportive partner, and for Mike Sherman, that partner is his wife, Cathleen.

While Cathleen prefers to stay out of the spotlight, she is an integral part of Sherman’s life.

Together, they are raising two young children, Lucille, 6, and Brooks, 4, in their Oklahoma home.

The couple’s life is a balancing act, juggling the demands of Sherman’s high-profile career with the joys and challenges of parenthood.

Though little public information is available about Cathleen, it’s clear she plays a vital role in keeping the family grounded.

Raising two young children is no small feat, especially when paired with Sherman’s busy schedule, which often includes mentoring students, overseeing media projects, and traveling for work.

Whether it’s cheering on Lucille and Brooks at their school events or creating a warm home environment, Cathleen’s presence provides the stability that allows Sherman to thrive professionally.

A Partnership Rooted in Oklahoma

Both Mike and Cathleen have deep ties to Oklahoma, where they’ve built their life together.

Sherman’s roots in the state run deep, from his days as a student at the University of Central Oklahoma to his long tenure at The Oklahoman.

Oklahoma is more than just a place for them—it’s home.

The couple’s shared love for their community likely influences their commitment to raising their children with strong values and a sense of belonging.

While Sherman’s career has taken him to places like New York and Florida, Oklahoma remains the heart of their family.

It’s where they’ve chosen to raise Lucille and Brooks, giving them a sense of the tight-knit community that has shaped their parents’ lives.

Whether it’s attending local events or enjoying Oklahoma’s vibrant sports culture, the Shermans are building memories together as a family.

It’s worth noting that Mike Sherman, the journalist, is not to be confused with another Mike Sherman known for his football coaching career.

The other Sherman served as head coach of the Green Bay Packers from 2000 to 2005 and Texas A&M University from 2008 to 2011.

While both men have made their mark in the world of sports, they are distinct individuals with no connection to each other.

Mike Sherman, tied to OU Student Media, is the journalist whose passion for storytelling and mentorship continues to inspire.

As Sherman steps into his role at OU Student Media, his focus is on empowering students to tell compelling stories and navigate the ever-changing world of journalism.

His weekly visits to the OU Daily will provide hands-on guidance, helping students hone their skills in reporting, editing, and investigative journalism.

For Sherman, it’s a chance to give back to the industry that has defined his career while fostering the same passion in his students.

Cathleen, though not in the public eye, is undoubtedly a key part of this new chapter. Her support allows Sherman to take on this ambitious role while maintaining a strong family foundation.

Together, they are facing the demands of work and family life with grace, showing that success is not just about professional accolades but also about the love and connection shared at home.
