Kevin Rogers Was A Dedicated Teacher And Mentor In His Atlanta Community
Kevin Andre Rogers Sr., 51, was a devoted teacher, coach, and mentor who played a key role in his Atlanta community, where he grew up in a close family with his siblings and his parents, Carmelita and Thomas Rogers.
His early years were spent on Hilburn Drive, where he formed lifelong bonds with neighbors who became like family.
Kevin attended Henderson High School, graduating in 1991, before pursuing higher education at Alabama A&M University, where he earned his degree in 1995.
His passion for teaching led him to a career in education, first at Towers High School and later at Miller Grove High School, where he taught pre-calculus and analytical geometry to sophomores and seniors.
At Miller Grove, Kevin was known for his dedication to his students.
He inspired young minds, pushing them to excel both in the classroom and beyond.
He was a coach who loved sports, especially golf, and mentored students while encouraging their growth. His patience and care made a lasting impact on many students and parents.
Beyond the classroom, Kevin’s selflessness glowed brightly.
In 2015, he courageously decided to be tested as a kidney donor, hoping to save a life.
Though the transplant was delayed due to a slightly elevated creatinine level, Kevin’s willingness to help others spoke volumes about his character.
He was also a devoted parishioner at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Atlanta, where his faith guided his actions and strengthened his commitment to serving others.
Kevin’s Personal Life Was Filled With Love And Connection
He was a proud father to his daughter, Mahogany Rucker, and a devoted son to his parents, Carmelita and Thomas Rogers.
The loss of his father, Thomas, in 2024 was a heavy blow, and now, the Rogers family faces another unthinkable tragedy.
Kevin grew up in Atlanta, and his childhood on Hilburn Drive made a strong impact on the people who knew him.
A longtime neighbor, Melody Waldon, shared a heartfelt tribute:
“This heartbreaking news has deeply affected me. Our 15-year age difference didn’t stop us from growing up together, and I cherished being his babysitter when he was three. Later, Kevin became my son’s Chemistry teacher and mentor at Miller Grove High School, and they both enjoyed playing golf together. His father’s passing last year in 2024 was a difficult blow, and this news is even more devastating. We were more than neighbors – we were family, and our bond remains strong. My thoughts and prayers are with Mama Carmalita, the Rogers family, and friends during this difficult time. Please keep them in your prayers. 🙏”

Melody Merritt, a friend, expressed her disbelief:
Kevin Rogers represented kindness and dedication. His sudden passing leaves a gap, but his legacy lives on through those he touched.
As the investigation into the crash continues, the focus remains on honoring Kevin’s memory and supporting his family, his mother, Carmelita; his daughter, Mahogany; his brother, Derrick; and the countless friends and students who called him family.
For now, those who knew him hold tight to their memories, finding comfort in the love and laughter he shared so freely.
Rest In Peace, Coach.
I have known the Rogers family since around 1977, when I was introduced to them via Walt Frazier. They would entertain us during Walt’s visits to Atlanta, and I considered them family because they embraced me with open arms. I vividly remember Derek and Kevin being at home and exhibiting nothing but respect and admiration towards me. Kevin texted me for Mother’s Day and I was overcome with joy because just knowing that he thought enough about me to send me the greeting. I happened to be at the house to visit his mother the day of the accident as Derek shared the tragedy with me which I couldn’t explain nor had words to express my grief. Praying for his entire family, friends, colleagues, students, and all those who had the pleasure of meeting him. He will always be remembered and held close to our hearts. Naomi C. Bell
