Maya Moore, one of the top players in WNBA history, stunned the basketball world by stepping away from professional sports at the peak of her career to free a Wrongfully Convicted Man, and later married him.
Moore, who was known for her incredible athleticism, multiple WNBA championships, and MVP awards, took the tough decision to leave her career and commitment to provide justice for someone Innocent.
She was born on June 11, 1989, in Jefferson City, Missouri, and became one of the standout prodigies at both Collins High School in Georgia and the University of Connecticut.
Due to her remarkable career, she was drafted first overall by the Minnesota Lynx in 2011. Before entering her tenth season with the Lynx, she was involved in efforts to free Jonathan Irons.
He was wrongfully convicted and imprisoned for over two decades. He was arrested in 1997 at the age of 16 and was sentenced to 50 years in prison for the fatal shooting of a homeowner during a burglary in O’Fallon, Missouri.
From Freeing Irons To Marrying Him
NBA star Maya Moore, who had met Irons through her family’s prison ministry, helped secure Irons’ release after more than a decade through her tireless advocacy, legal research, and campaigns.
He was released from prison on July 1, 2020. Just nine days after his release, he married Moore, which came as a surprise to many individuals around the world.
The news was announced by the couple on the Good Morning America show in September 2020.
In February 2022, Moore and Irons welcomed their first child as well, naming them Jonathon Hughston Irons, also nicknaming them JJ.
Since Iron’s release, he and Moore have been actively working as advocates for criminal justice reform, raising awareness about wrongful convictions, legal injustices, and voting rights.
Experience Voices is also working with the couple to release the documentary “The Release,” which covers their stories of how they worked together, fueled by hope and dignity, to battle false convictions.
The Return will have its first public screening on Friday, November 7, 2025, at 12 PM during the CCDA Conference in Gallery Overlook H.

- Moore is a 4-time WNBA Champion with the Lynx in 2011, 2013, 2015, and 2017. She was also awarded WNBA Finals MVP in 2013 and WNBA MVP in 2014.
