Kike Hernandez was born on August 24, 1991, in San Juan, Puerto Rico, to his parents, Enrique Hernández Sr. and Mónica González.

Kike’s father, Enrique Hernández Sr., is a proud Puerto Rican who played a significant role in shaping his son’s baseball journey.
Enrique Hernández Sr. was a baseball enthusiast from Puerto Rico who dreamed of playing professionally but couldn’t pursue that path after a car accident in his youth. He later became a scout for the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Although his dream was cut short, he fulfilled it through his son. Enrique Sr. was by his side from when Kiké could swing a bat; he served as his first coach and biggest cheerleader.
In fact, several instances speak volumes about his support for Kike’s career. Living in San Juan, the Hernández family turned their backyard into a training ground where Enrique Sr. would coach Kike.
Eventually, his dedication paid off when Kike excelled at the American Military Academy in Guaynabo and caught the eye of MLB scouts.
In 2009, Enrique got to see his dream turn into reality which he had been thinking since long when the Houston Astros drafted Kike in the sixth round.
Between 2015 and 2016, Enrique Sr. faced a serious health challenge with multiple myeloma and underwent a bone marrow transplant, and he has since been in remission.
