Mutaz Essa Barshim is an international star Qatari track and field athlete who competes in the high jump and recently competed in World Athletics Championships Oregon 2022.

Barshim clinched his third consecutive World Championships gold, the most of any high jumper in World Athletics Championships Oregon 2022.

He is currently the second-best jumper of all time, with a personal best of 2.43.

Mutaz Barshim | Early Life & Childhood

Mutaz Barshim was born on 24th June 1991 to a Sudanese family in Doha, Qatar.

His family consisted of five brothers, one sister, and his father, Essa Mohammed Barshim.

Like Mutza’s interest, his father was an athlete who was a middle-distance and long-distance runner. 

father Essa influenced the Barshim children’s involvement in Track and Field activities.

Murtaza’s father became the coach at a local club after retiring from the sport. 

One of his brothers, Muamer Aissa Barsham, is also a high jumper. 

Barshim tried to participate in running and the long jump during his youth, and he attended an Arabic school in Doha, where he learned English. 

At 15, he began his glorious journey in the high jump and began training at the Aspire Academy in Doha. 

Career Journey

Early Career

In 2010, Mutaz Barshim experienced his first international success in Gothenburg. He set a Qatari indoor record in early February with a jump of 2.25 m. 

He opened the door to his glory with such a record and was met with success in the 2010 Asian Indoor Athletics Championship. In the championship, he earned the gold medal with a clearance of 2.20 m.

Similarly, Mutaz Barshim represented Qatar in the 2010 IAAF World Indoor Championship. There, he was in fourteenth place with a record of 2.23 m.

He became the first-ever graduate of the Aspire Academy to compete in the World Championships. 

He won the Arab Athletics Championships for Junior with an outdoor best record of 2.23 m on May 2010.

Likewise, Barshim secured the junior continental title at the 2010 Asian Junior. His record of 2.31 m was considered a national record and a world-leading mark for junior athletes.

Barshim earned such achievements at a young age by jumping off the left foot. 

2012 Olympic Games 

During the Asian Athletics Championships in Kobe, Mutaz Barshim won the gold medal after clearing a height of 2.35 m. Additionally, his result set a new national and championship record. 

His continuation with good form and performance led him to win a gold medal at the Military World Games in Rio de Janerio. 

Likewise, in the Gulf Championships and the Arab Championships, he became the high jump champion. 

After such achievements, he won another international gold medal in the 2011 Pan Arab Games held in Dubai.

Barshim established a new personal best and national record of 2.37 m in China’s 2012 Indoor Asian Championships. It was considered the highest indoor jump in the world as of 2012.

In the 2012 London Olympic Games, Mutaz Barshim earned the bronze medal with a 2.29 m jump. Later, he revealed that he suffered a back injury in early 2012. 

The 2013 Season Championships 

Barshim started his indoor 2013 seasons with participation in six European competitions, always performing a jump of 2.30 m or better. 

He went to Banska Bystrica, Slovak Republic, to compete in the Europa SC High Jump competition. However, his aching back became a major drawback restricting his jump. 

Not wanting to put more pressure on his injury, he ended his indoor season on 6th February.

With his appearance in the GCC Athletics Championships held in his hometown, he began his outdoor season journey on 10 April 2013. 

Similarly, Barshim set a new record by clearing a 2.36 m jump at the Prefontaine Classic Diamond League Meet. 

During the 2013 IAAF World Championships in Athletics, he won a silver medal, making it his best result throughout the 2013 season. 

The 2014 IAAF Championships 

Despite the chronic back pain at the beginning of the season, Barshim participated in the 2014 IAAF World Indoor Championships in Poland. 

During his first attempt, he cleared seven consecutive heights in the finals and established a new Asian indoor record of a 2.38 m jump.

After winning the gold medal in the championship, it marked his 3rd medal in the major competitions. 

After competing in various competitions and with different opponents, Barshim won the medal at the 2014 Asian Indoor Athletics Championships held in Hanxou, China.

In the same year, the athlete also won the 2014 Asian Games held in Incheon, South Korea.

Recent Career 

Barshim participated in the 2015 IAAD Diamond League held in Eugene, Oregon, and won a gold medal. He again represented Qatar in the 2016 Olympic Games and earned people’s hearts with a silver medal. 

The same year, Barshim won the IAAF Diamond League stops in Lausanne, Switzerland, and Birmingham.

Later, in 2017 Brashaim took part in the IAAF World Championships, winning the gold medal. 

In October 2019, Brashaim became the first man to defend the World High Jump title with a jump of 2.3 m in Doha.

Tokyo 2020 Athletics Test Event

Mutzaz Barshim is among the international stars competing in the Ready Steady Tokyo meeting.

Finally, after two years, Brashaim made his first appearance at the World Athletics Continental Tour Gold meeting at the Tokyo Stadium. 
 
He competed with Japan’s three top high jumpers-Naoto Tobe, Tomohiro Shinno, and Takashi Eto.  

Shared The Olympic 2021 Gold Medal With Gianmarco Tamberi

The pair were flawless through the final; they passed every level from 2.19 m to 2.37 m without fault.

That made them equal-first on countback, with the Olympic record of 2.39 m.

Barshim and Tamberi instead spoke with officials about whether they even needed to enter a jump-off to decide gold.

The pair then shook hands and celebrated as joint gold medallists.

In 109 years, for the first time in athletics, an Olympic gold medal was shared between
Mutaz Essa Barshim of Qatar and Gianmarco Tamberi of Italy.

World Athletics Championships Oregon 2022

Mutaz Essa Barshim flapped his arms like a bird as he strutted off the high jump mat.

Barshim cleared the bar on his first chance through to the winning height of 2.37 m at the World Athletics Championships Oregon 2022. Barshim clinched his third consecutive World Championships gold, the most of any high jumper.

“Three world golds in a row is something that has never been done before. I came here to secure that,” Barshim said. “I know I put a lot of hard work to be where I am.”

Barshim outlasted Korea’s Woo Sanghyeok (2.35 m) and Ukrainian Andriy Protsenko (2.33 m).
