Newport News, Virginia, An 8-year-old boy with big NFL dreams and an even bigger heart is clinging to life after a cowardly hit-and-run driver in a Cadillac Escalade struck him just moments after he stepped off his school bus.

Karmelo White, a third-grader at Yates Elementary and a standout MVP in his youth football league, was crossing the street in the marked crosswalk at 28th Street and Orcutt Avenue on Monday, November 16, when the black SUV slammed into him and sped away without stopping.

The impact left little Karmelo unconscious in the middle of the road with horrific injuries: a fractured skull, neck trauma, swollen lungs and intestines, and partial hearing loss in his left ear.

He was rushed to the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters in Norfolk, where he spent days on life support in the Pediatric ICU.

Doctors and family say it is nothing short of a miracle that he is still alive.

His aunt Shalijah White told reporters through tears.

“He’s in a lot of pain, but he’s fighting, We’re devastated. His mom is angry, the whole family is angry. How could someone hit a child and just keep driving? No child deserves this – especially not Karmelo. He’s the sweetest, most loving little boy you’ll ever meet.”

Before the tragedy, Karmelo was the picture of a vibrant, confident kid.

Nicknamed “Melo” by everyone who loves him, he dominated on the football field and the basketball court, idolized Spider-Man, and talked nonstop about one day playing in the NFL.

His single mom made sure he never missed a practice or game, cheering louder than anyone from the sidelines.

Now those dreams hang in the balance while Karmelo faces a long, uncertain recovery that will include extensive medical care, therapy, and mounting bills.

Shalijah said, speaking directly to the driver:

“How could you leave an 8-year-old child just lying on the ground and keep going – no help, nothing? Just do the right thing and come forward. If that was your child, you would want someone to stop.”

Since the news broke, the Newport News community has wrapped its arms around the family.

A GoFundMe titled Support Karmelo White’s Recovery” was quickly created to help his mother with medical expenses, transportation, and the many costs that come with a prolonged hospital stay.

Friends describe Karmelo as the kind of kid who lights up every room he enters, and the outpouring of love reflects that.

Social media has been flooded with prayers and messages of support:

Davon Mitchell wrote-:

Note to the driver: It has to be some extremely heavy weight to carry around KNOWING within yourself that you hit that young man and left him there. Accountability and a day of reckoning is inevitable as we pray for the young man Karmelo’s healing and recovery!!”

Dupe Williams JP added-:

“He is such a brave boy. I pray for a speedy recovery for him. Since has the self-will of an overcomer, the battle is half-won. I pray the driver will hand himself in, if you run away because you panicked and you show up at a nearest police station, the judge might look kindly upon you and reduce your sentence. You can’t run forever.”

Quo Johnson also wrote:

Police Continue the Search

Newport News Police confirm the suspect vehicle is a black Cadillac Escalade and are actively investigating the Karmelo hit-and-run case.

Detectives are asking anyone who may have seen the SUV in the area of 28th Street and Orcutt Avenue on Monday afternoon, or who has dash-cam footage, to come forward immediately.

It’s only a matter of time,” one investigator told local media. “We will find who did this.”

As little Karmelo continues to fight in the hospital, his godparents, Ericka and Destany, his aunts, uncles, teammates, and an entire city are holding vigil, praying not just for his body to heal, but for justice to be served.

No child should have to pay this price for simply walking home from school.

The family is asking everyone to keep Karmelo in their prayers and, if you can, to contribute to the GoFundMe so his mom can stay by his side without worrying about the bills.

Because right now, every prayer, every dollar, and every tip that helps catch the driver matters.

Get well soon, Melo. The whole community is rooting for its little MVP to run back onto that field one day. ❤️
