With the NFL coaching carousel in motion, rumors are swirling around a surprising potential trade involving Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell.

The Vikings have been the surprise team of 2024, with their exceptional performance that put their coach, Kevin, on the spot as one of the top options for trading this year.

Although Black Monday has yet to come, the coach trading carousel has already started, with many teams eyeing O’Connell.

However, Kevin, who is in the last year of his contract with the team, apparently has no plans to entertain any trading offers.

While there are rumors that the two parties have yet to have contract talks, the Vikings might even extend their contract with the coach.

Kevin O’Connell Is on His Last Year of Contract With the Minnesota Vikings!

Kevin O’Connell became head coach of the Minnesota Vikings on February 16, 2022, after his Super Bowl LVI victory.

Since then, he has led the team to their first NFC North since 2017 and several other historic moments.

FOX Sports reported that multiple teams have been considering making a trade offer for O’Connell, who is entering the final season of his contract.

In a recent interview with the Minnesota Star Tribune, Mark Wilf, co-owner of the Vikings, expressed his joy in working with the coach, saying:

We’re looking forward to a great future with these guys, We look forward to having those conversations with each of them after the season. We have tremendous confidence, and we look forward to their continued leadership of the franchise.

While there were other promising candidates on the list for coaching trades, Kevin’s name came as a surprise to many.

Fox NFL insider Jay Glazer talked about him being a potential candidate on the morning of January 5, saying:

There is one candidate out there that’s going to surprise you all, That no one knows is on [the] list, and he is… Kevin O’Connell.

One of the major reasons for his trade is that he hasn’t engaged in any contract negotiations, and this is the final year of his deal.

Given his exceptional coaching expertise, he now appears to be the ideal opportunity for teams to pursue a trade for him.

Further on the matter, analyst and former Giants star Michael Strahan gave his take on his success on Fox NFL Sunday:

I gotta say, if you’re Kevin O’Connell, the success he’s had, you’re surprised they haven’t locked him down,

Sports critics and channels have been on about Kevin and his potential trade over the weekend.

Fans have been excited to see what unfolds for Kevin, whether he stays with the Vikings for his last season or trades elsewhere.

Over the years, Kevin has proved why he deserves to be one of the NFL coaches, and his worth has been recognized recently.

If the Vikings won’t extend his contract, he already has good prospects that someone else will trade for him.
