Nikolas Tomas Stauskas (born October 7, 1993) is a proficient Canadian basketball player. He was born to Paul and Ruta Stauskas. He has an older brother named Peter Stauskas.

Stauskas had little interest in the popular Canadian ice hockey or street hockey sports, and he began playing soccer at six but was forced to retire due to an arm injury. So instead, he began playing basketball with Ausra Sports Club, a traveling team for the youth of Lithuanian heritage based in Toronto.

Stauskas’s parents are supportive of his interest in the game. He often shares pictures with his mother on social media, often attending his matches and motivating him.

As a childhood Toronto Raptors fan, he played a practice match with Vince Carter, his idol, at a fan gathering. This incident fueled his passion for the sport even more. Then, when he was in fifth grade, he and his older brother Peter decided to build a basketball court in their yard instead of a swimming pool.

High School Career

Stauskas went to Loyola Catholic Secondary School and started playing basketball at the school level. During 2007-08 he had a wonderful basketball-playing career in high school. 

He enrolled in South Kent School for the following season due to a lack of coaching assistance at Loyola Catholic Secondary School, but he skipped the game due to a hip injury (2009-2010).

After getting homesick, he eventually relocated to St. Mark’s School. He was named the 2012 All-NEPSAC Class AA first team after leading his team to a NEPSAC Class AA Championship triumph in 2012, with MVP honors.

College Career

Stauskas was referred to Villanova, Iowa State, Georgetown, Notre Dame, Florida, and Providence during his high school career, but he eventually joined the Michigan Wolverines men’s basketball team.

He showcased his excellent game skills and techniques in his two seasons at Michigan and impressed the team coaches.

Stauskas was given the ‘USBWA National Freshman of the Year freshman season.
He was voted ‘Big Ten Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Year the following season and named first-team All-Big Ten by the officials. 

A local of Mississauga, Ontario, Stauskas played two seasons of National Collegiate Athletic Affiliation (NCAA) competition for the Michigan Wolverines finishing with the 2013–14 group before declaring for the NBA draft.

NBA Career

Stauskas was drafted eighth generally within the 2014 NBA draft by the Sacramento Kings, for which he started his NBA career. Stauskas was labeled with the epithet Sauce Castillo after a closed captioning error resulted in a social media meme towards the conclusion of his rookie season.

He was exchanged to the Philadelphia 76ers in July 2015 in a swap bargain. Amid the season, his comments around being a rookie white player off-field pulled in more media consideration than his execution.

On December 7, 2017, Stauskas was exchanged for Brooklyn Nets. He played for the Nets for a year.

On July 5, 2018, Stauskas was signed by Portland Trail Blazers. Nik was exchanged to the Cleveland Cavaliers on February 4, 2019, and played for the group from 2019-20.

Baskonia signed him for a year on August 1, 2019, but the club terminated the contract on February 12, 2020. In 2021, he played alongside many clubs like Raptors 905, Grand Rapids Gold, and Miami Heat.

International Career

Stauskas played for the Canadian junior national group in Argentina’s 2009 FIBA Americas Under-16 Championship and won a bronze medal. Moreover, it permitted him to qualify for the 2010 FIBA Under-17 World Championship.

Canada won bronze medals at the 2009 FIBA Americas Under-16 Championship and the 2015 FIBA Americas Championship, and he was a part of the team. 

He was in the Canadian senior national team in December 2012 and represented Canada at the 2015 FIBA Americas Championship. However, he could not play in the team’s last bronze award-winning coordinate against Mexico because of an illness.

Like every other player, Stauskas also had many injuries in his basketball career. 

On October 11, 2017, Stauskas sprained his right ankle and had to miss out on games. In 2018 he had two injuries: a left ankle injury and a quad injury. 

On January 24, 2019, Stauskas had a left knee injury, and he missed the game for a week. Then, again in April 2019, he suffered from a back injury. 

Despite suffering from all these injuries, he never gave up on his game and always worked hard for further improvements and achievements.
