Michael Faced Legal Troubles In 2007 That Temporarily Brought His NFL Career To A Halt

Michael Vick earned $120 million from his NFL playing career alone excluding earnings from any brand endorsements or such.

As the first African-American quarterback to be picked first overall in the 2001 NFL draft, he signed a six-year contract worth $62 million with a $3 million signing bonus.

However, in April, 2007, authorities raided a property owned by Vicks and discovered evidence of a dogfighting ring, which led to his arrest.

The former football player pled guilty to a felony charge and was sentenced to federal prison for 23 months.

Michael declared bankruptcy in 2008, citing owned money of $18 million to creditors. However, he did manage to pay back the sum in 2018 closing the bankruptcy case.

All together, the coach paid around $30 million in taxes, creditors, and lawyers between 2007 and 2012 as a result of his legal battles.

While his legal troubles could have significantly effected his NFL career, the Eagles gave him a second chance to continue his career.

Michael signed a one-year contract worth $1.6 million with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2009. Later, he got a 5 year extension of the contract that was worth $80 million.

According to Celebrity Net Worth, he earned an annual salary of $16.5 million and was the third athlete in sports history to have signed more than one $100 million plus contract.

Post-retirement, Vick ventured into business and media along with coaching. He has launched his own clothing brand and occasionally partners with brands such as Nike and EA Sports.

Thanks to his varied sources of income, he enjoys a comfortable and luxurious lifestyle. He owns a $2.4 million home in Florida.

Further, he has an impressive car collection that includes luxury cars like Rolls Royce, Bentleys and exotic sports cars.
