West Salem, Ohio, The Northwestern Local Schools community in West Salem, Ohio, is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Max Mendez, a teenager at Northwestern High School, who tragically passed away on May 12, 2025, following a fatal barn accident.
Although the intricate details surrounding his barn accident remain unknown, the tragic news has left his family, friends, and anyone who knew him speechless, now that Mendez is no longer among them.
An aspiring wrestler, Max Mendez, is survived by his parents, Saul Mendez and Leah, and his younger brother, Sam.

The teenage boy was a 7th-grade student at Northwestern High School, where he participated in school and sports activities.
In addition to maintaining sound academics at school, Mendez fulfilled his passion for wrestling at the Smithville Wrestling Club and Forge Wrestling Club.
In November 2023, Mendez and his younger brother, Sam, earned third place in the Wooster Open tournament.
Maria Dawn Shanlian, Mendez’s parents’ friend, shared a heartfelt and compassionate community support post on a Facebook group.
Last night we received an unimaginable call, a friend of ours lost her teenage son due to a barn accident. These next days for the Mendez family will likely be some of the darkest days they will ever walk through. While I can’t know fully the pain and grief Leah is walking, my momma heart breaks for her.

Many of you in this group are connected with Leah and her family either through past years of homeschooling, days of church at West Hill, your kids participating in school or sports with Max, or monthly girls nights with Leah. When a family in our community experiences an unexpected and unimaginable loss, it’s felt in my ways.
Maria recalled that Leah had previously shared advice on supporting mothers in difficult times. She wrote:
She talked about how instead of just saying “let me know if you need anything”, be proactive and offer what you can and let them know you’ll be coming by or dropping off something.

“🤍 As a community of moms, let’s pray for this family, for Leah, Saul and Sam, that God would comfort them and they would feel supported and surrounded by the Body of Christ 🤍, ” Maria added in the post.
Another family friend, John Bellamy, wrote, “Truly heartbroken! Praying for Saul, Leah, and Sam. Please pray for this family!!“
Likewise, Northwestern Local School expressed grief over Mendez’s loss through a lengthy statement, writing:
Max was a valued member of our school community, known for his kindness, bright spirit, and positive attitude. This loss will deeply impact our students, staff, and families, and we are committed to providing the support needed during this difficult time.
