Olympic gold medalist and Angel City FC forward Sydney Leroux has always been known for her strength, both on and off the pitch.

From dominating the international soccer stage to navigating the complexities of motherhood and divorce in the public eye, Leroux continues to stand in her truth unapologetically.

Now, she’s making headlines again, not for her goal-scoring, but for her empowering stance on single motherhood and her children’s identity.

Sydney Leroux Divorced Her Husband After 6 Years Of Marriage

Sydney Leroux, 34, was once half of one of soccer’s power couples.

She married MLS star Dom Dwyer in 2015 in a private ceremony, sweetly revealed to the public on Valentine’s Day.

The couple welcomed two children: Cassius Cruz Dwyer in 2016 and Roux James Dwyer in 2019.

Leroux famously returned to training just three months after giving birth to Roux, challenging the expectations of what people thought women athletes could achieve.

But in August 2021, after six years of marriage, Leroux shared on social media that she and Dwyer were divorcing.

She wrote,

“I have always been a transparent person. With that, I would like to share that Dom and I are ending our marriage. My children have always been and always will be my first priority.”

Following their separation, Leroux assumed full custody of her children and stepped into single motherhood with fearless determination.

Sydney Leroux Answered Why Her Kids Don’t Have Their Father’s Last Name

This week, the former USWNT star addressed a question that many have asked: why her kids don’t have their father’s last name.

On Instagram, one user commented:

“Great kids that don’t have daddy’s last name?”

Leroux’s response was calm, clear, and powerful:

“As the parent with full custody, full responsibility and who does all the parenting… I thought it made perfect sense that they have my last name.”

The statement was accompanied by Alicia Keys’ “Superwoman” playing in the background, a fitting anthem for Leroux’s journey.

She added in her story,

“A lot of people have asked me this so I’m just letting everyone know…”

Sydney Leroux Is Preparing For A Comeback

Though she recently announced a break from the 2024 season to focus on her mental health, Leroux isn’t done.

After signing a three-year contract extension with Angel City FC through 2027, she’s expected to return soon, stronger than ever.

Her candidness about the physical and emotional toll of coming back to professional sports postpartum has resonated deeply with fans.

She said:

“I felt like I had to learn how to run again… But your body knows what to do.”

Now, having her kids watch her play in packed stadiums brings it all full circle.

She added,

“They think it’s so cool. They get to see me follow my dreams.”

Leroux is also finding happiness again.

She’s currently in a relationship with NBA agent Dave Spahn, and while she has kept the details of her personal life more private this time around.
