The Baltimore Orioles organization and the baseball world are in mourning following the heartbreaking death of Luis Alexander Guevara.

He was a 19-year-old minor league infielder who tragically passed away on Sunday, June 16, 2025, after a jet ski crash off Lido Key in Sarasota, Florida.

Born on February 6, 2006, in Tinaco, Venezuela, Guevara was considered one of the Orioles’ most promising young talents.

His untimely passing has left teammates, coaches, and fans devastated.

Luis Guevara Had A Bright Career

Luis Guevara signed with the Orioles as an international free agent in January 2023.

Touted for his speed, defensive skills, and switch-hitting ability, Guevara quickly made a name for himself in the Orioles’ farm system.

Described by the team as a player with “excellent leadoff hitter makeup” and “advanced bat-to-ball skills,” Guevara impressed scouts and coaches alike with his easy swing and power to the gaps.

He began his professional journey in the Dominican Summer League and made steady progress through the system.

In 2025, he played 30 games across multiple levels, including 24 games with Single-A Delmarva, 4 games with the Florida Complex League Orioles, and 2 games with Double-A Chesapeake.

Luis Guevara’s Life Was Claimed By Jet Ski Crash

The accident occurred around 8:00 p.m. on Sunday when two personal watercraft collided head-on off the coast of Lido Key.

Four individuals were thrown into the water.

According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission, bystanders quickly came to the rescue and helped bring the injured ashore.

Two people were transported to a local hospital as trauma alerts; Guevara was among them.

Despite medical intervention, he succumbed to his injuries, shocking those closest to him and the broader baseball community.

In light of the tragedy, the Orioles postponed two Florida Complex League games on Monday and Tuesday.

Mike Elias, Executive VP & GM, Baltimore Orioles said,

“Luis was a beloved member of our organization, and we are devastated following his tragic passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and teammates and we ask for their continued privacy during this difficult time.”

Luis Guevara Is Remembered As A Beloved Soul

Tributes have poured in from fellow players, coaches, and fans.

Luis’s teammates, many of whom are also young Latin American prospects, expressed their heartbreak on social media.

The Minor League Baseball official account also issued a heartfelt statement:

“We join the Orioles and the rest of the baseball community in mourning the loss of infielder Luis Guevara.”

Back in his hometown of Tinaco, Venezuela, the local community is devastated.

One local wrote:

“We join the mourning of the Guevara family for the sad death of Orioles prospect Luis Guevara. Our town of Tinaco is mourning, now you are next to your father. Rest in peace, Luis.”

Luis Guevara was also a dedicated son, a committed teammate, and a beloved friend.

His father, Luis Eduardo Guevara, a physical education teacher, had passed away previously, making this tragedy even more painful for those left behind.

The Orioles community, the people of Tinaco, and baseball fans everywhere now remember Luis Guevara for the person he was on and off the field.

Gone too soon, but never forgotten!
