A wave of grief has swept through the Chocowinity Middle School and broader community following the tragic death of Lindsy Angeles Vargas, a beloved 14-year-old student and volleyball player who passed away after an accident while visiting Mexico.
Lindsy, remembered as a bright, kind-hearted soul with a contagious smile and boundless potential, was a cherished part of the school and her local church community.

Her sudden passing has left classmates, teachers, and loved ones grappling with shock and heartbreak.
One of Lindsy’s teachers at Chocowinity Middle, Grant Harrell, shared a heartfelt tribute:

Harrell reflected on the profound impact she made in a short time, describing the loss as one that leaves a lasting wound in the hearts of her teachers and peers.
Mother of Mercy Church, where Lindsy and her family have long been active members, issued a public statement mourning her loss:
“She was a beloved member of our parish family, known for her joyful presence and kind spirit.”
Lindsy’s mother, Maggy Ferrusca, along with her sisters, Nancy and Johanna, are dedicated catechists who have faithfully served their parish.
The church is currently working with the family as they await the return of Lindsy’s body to the U.S. Funeral arrangements are still pending.
A GoFundMe Has Been Organized To Ease The Family’s Pain
In the wake of Lindsy’s passing, a GoFundMe campaign was launched by her brother, Kevin Angeles Vargas, to help cover the expenses of transporting her body home and arranging a proper funeral.
The GoFundMe stated,
“She was the baby in our family and we are all so devastated to know that she has passed… We really appreciate any help that you can give, even if it’s just giving your condolences.”
The campaign has already raised more than $9,000 of its $12,000 goal, reflecting the outpouring of support from friends, family, and even strangers whose lives Lindsy’s story has touched.
One family friend shared:
I know this family very well and my heart is broken for them all. I know Gods will be done but this is just gut wrenching. 😢❤️🙏❤️ If you can help financially please do but if not please pray for them. They need EVERY PRAYER
