A dedicated volunteer and coach in five-pin bowling, Richard “Rickey” Francis Burns, took his last breath on September 17, 2025, at the age of 81.

Rickey Burns is survived by his wife, Cynthia, and their children, Kimberly Younker and her husband, David; daughter, Amanda Burns; son, Blair Burns, and his wife, Heidi.

After his passing, numerous individuals expressed their condolences on the Facebook wall of his daughter, Amanda Burns. One of them, Tim Gamble, wrote:

So sorry to hear about your Dad, our thoughts are with you Blair and Family. Lots of great memories.

He was a loving grandfather to his grandchildren, Kelsey Cudmore, Cody Cudmore, Logan Younker (Shea), Brandon Younker, Jordyn Knox, and Madison Knox.

Rickey also leaves behind his great-grandchildren, Suzie and Tucker.

Likewise, he will also be remembered by his siblings, Mike Burns (Theresa), Andy Burns, Carley Cormier (Jimmy), brother-in-law Mike Bell, and extended family members.

Rickey is preceded in demise by his parents, James and Mary Sally Burns; brothers Wilfred, Donnie (Marie), Maurice (Debby), Bobby, and Jim (Dot), and sisters Gertie Wolfe (Frank) and Helen Bell.

Born on January 31, 1944, in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Rickey worked at the Sherwood Rink for several years.

He also dedicated a significant part of his life to volunteering with the Special Olympics. He enjoyed playing five-pin bowling and spending moments with his family.

Eventually, Rickey’s commitment to sports earned him a place in the PEI Sports Hall of Fame.

In November 2023, he was named one of the inductees for the Class of 2023. He was recognized for his long-term work as a coach and volunteer in five-pin bowling and Special Olympics PEI over the course of more than 4 decades.

The induction ceremony took place on April 5, 2024, at Credit Union Place in Summerside, Prince Edward Island.

His daughter Amanda presented him for the honor, and Rickey gave a short, light-hearted speech that brought smiles to the more than 150 people in attendance.

Reportedly, a visitation will be held at Belvedere Funeral Home on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m.

A funeral service is scheduled for Wednesday, September 24, at 2 p.m. in the chapel.

During this difficult time, we pray for the strength of Rickey’s wife, kids, friends, and extended family.

Rest Easy, Coach Rickey Burns!
