Pero Antic is a Macedonian basketball executive and former professional player who currently serves as the president of the Basketball Federation of North Macedonia. He is also a vice president of the Olympics Committee in North Macedonia.

Early Life, Family & Education

Pero Antic was born to his father, Zoran Antic, and mother, in Skopje, SFR, Yugoslavia, in North Macedonia, on July 29, 1982.

His father was a professional basketball player in Yugoslavia for 14 years and won several trophies. Zoran started working for different companies after his basketball career.

According to one of Pero’s interviews, as his father was busy traveling and working at companies, he and his brother would play with trophies as toys and smash them without realizing it, for which he now apologizes.

Pero’s mother was a handball player. However, there is not much information available about his mother.

Similarly, his brother was also a basketball player, although he has not talked about his brother much in public.

Growing up with athletic parents undoubtedly influenced Pero’s decision to pursue his career in basketball.

When Pero was 16, he left home for high school, took care of everything, and lived alone until he became a family man himself.

Early Careers

After joining high school, he was assisted by his coaches, and he was later selected by AEK Athens, which offered him four years deal, and he won his first Greek League Championship in 2002.

The former basketball player got a chance to play with several teams boosting his basketball skills. He played with teams like Rabotnicki Skopje, AEK Athens, Crvena Zvezda, Academic Sofia, Lokomotiv Kuban, Spartak St.Petersburg, and Olympiacos.

Pero played with those teams spending 12 years as a professional basketball player before making his NBA debut. Similarly, during his 2007-08 seasons, he was honored with MVP in Bulgarian National Basketball League.

During his time with Lukoil Academic, he recorded 23.3 points and 9.3 rebounds per game.

In the same way, in the 2010-11 seasons, he played his best, leading his team to reach the EuroLeague finals.

Following his incredible performance, he signed a two years contract with Olympiacos Piraeus on September 26, 2011.

He continued his finest-ever season with Olympiacos, first winning the Greek League (2012) and later the Euroleague trophy two years in a row (2012 and 2013).

After his contract expired with the Olympiacos, he signed a two-year contract with Atlanta Hawks on July 25, 2013.

His first game for the NBA franchise was against the Miami Heat, scoring three points and grabbing four rebounds in 16 minutes while shooting only 1-8 from the field and 1-6 from three.

During his game over Charlotte Bobcats, he showed his excellent play by posting a game-tying score. Also, against the Golden State Warriors, he was included in the starting lineup for the first time.

In addition, he was picked for the Rising Star Challenge game, which he was unable to attend due to an injury to his right ankle.

Antic recorded his NBA career-high 18 points in a 107-88 win over the Pacers. After the Hawks bagged a surprising 101-93 away win to take the lead in the series against the Pacers in the playoffs.

During the final game of the series, he was involved in an altercation with the Pacers’ David West, which resulted in penalties for both players.

After his NBA journey came to an end, he signed a two-year contract with the option of AN additional year with the Turkish team Fenerbahce on June 30, 2015.

After playing for two years with the Turkish team and winning the Turkish League championship but failing to clinch the 2016 Euroleague Final Four, he joined Crvena zvezda on September 11, 2017.

National Team Career

As a captain and member of the Macedonia national team, Pero led his team to the semi-finals of FIBA EuroBasket 2011.

Similarly, he did his best as a rebounder in the tournament against Spain and averaged 11.5 points in each game.

Throughout the tournament, he played against Russia, Finland, Herzegovina, and Bosnia in his national team career.

Antic also captained the national team at the FIBA EuroBasket 2013 but was deprived of any major success. However, he scored in double figures in four of the five group matches.

With this failed attempt at the EuroBasket, he announced his retirement from the national team.

On the 8th of April 2015, Pero, along with his teammate Thabo Sefolosha was arrested for disorderly conduct and obstructing authorities.

The former Indiana Pacers forward Chris Copeland and a female companion were stabbed with a knife outside a New York nightclub.

Per the NYPD, Pero and Thabo refused to leave the crime scene, and the situation escalated after Pero got physical with one of the arresting officers.

After the investigation, the officials were convinced Pero was trying to calm down his friend, and in the process of doing so, he grabbed one of the officer’s shoulder.

The officials didn’t believe it was in an aggressive manner and none of the cops were harmed, and all the charges on Pero were dropped.
