Royce O’Neale and Shaq don’t have any familial relationship, but they share a connection through their careers as American professional basketball players in the NBA.

Royce is the power forward for the Phoenix Suns, whereas Shaquille, better known as Shaq, is a former basketball player who played center for the Boston Celtics before his retirement.

Shaq, Shaunie Henderson’s ex-husband, is a 7-foot-1-inch former basketball player now a sports analyst on the TV program Inside the NBA.

Royce O’Neale and Shaq Don’t Have Blood Relations But Are Connected by Their Successful Careers in the NBA!

Many have wondered if the two athletes have a familial connection because of their similar last names. However, they aren’t related by blood and the similarity in their last names is nothing but coincidental.

They hail from different families and regions. Royce’s journey started from Texas to the NBA, while Shaq’s began in New Jersey before his rise to the pinnacle of the sport.

Royce’s path to the NBA included standout performances at Harker Heights High School and collegiate basketball at the University of Denver and Baylor University.

Known for his defensive skills and versatility on the court, he was an integral player for the Brooklyn Nets until February 2024 and now for the Phoenix Suns.

The 31-year-old player, Royce, was traded to the Phoenix Suns in a three-team trade on February 8, 2024. Suns’ sent Keita Bates-Diop, Jordan Goodwin, and three future second-round draft picks.

The Memphis Grizzlies were also part of this deal, involving David Roddy, Chimezie Metu, and Yuta Watanabe and a swap of first-round picks in 2026.

On the other hand, Shaquille, aka Shaq, remains one of the most dominant players in NBA history to this very day.

Not to mention, Shaq enjoyed a triumphant career. During his basketball career, he played for teams like the Orlando Magic, Los Angeles Lakers, Miami Heat, Phoenix Suns, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Boston Celtics.

His successful career has earned him several accolades, including four NBA championships and three NBA Finals MVP awards.

That said, it is also not out of the realm of possibility Royce and Shaq have ever crossed paths at some star-studded functions. Nonetheless, thus far, there’s no evidence of that happening.

Royce and Shaq Have Distinct Family Roots of Their Own!

Royce was born on June 5, 1993, in Killeen, Texas, to Roy O’Neale and Deborah Kingwood.

Phoenix Suns power forward isn’t the only child of his parents, but he grew up alongside his elder sister, Dana Trenee.

His parents of African-American lineage have always been supportive of his career and share a sound bond.

Shaq was born to Lucille O’Neal and Joe Toney on March 16, 1972, in Newark, New Jersey.

He was born into a household already involved in basketball; his father, Joe, was an all-state guard high school basketball player.

However, Joe’s career was cut short after he struggled with drug addiction. He was arrested for drug possession when Shaq was only an infant.

Later, his mother married Phillip Arthur Harrison, an Army sergeant. Shaq grew up in a multicultural religious household, as his mother was Christian and his stepfather was Muslim.

Given Phillip’s army service, Shaq moved to military bases and later settled in San Antonio, Texas.

Whereas Shaq and his biological father, Joe, had an estranged relationship for decades. However, the basketball player’s feelings for Joe softened, and he met his father for the first time in 2016 after his step-father’s demise in 2013.

In Case You Didn’t Know

  • The former basketball player Shaq has six children: Shareef O’Neal, Me’arah O’Neal, Myles B. O’Neal, Shaqir O’Neal, Amirah O’Neal, and Taahirah O’Neal.
  • Shaq’s song “Biological Didn’t Bother” from his album Shaq Fu: The Return dismissed his biological father, Joe, with the line “Phil is my father.”
