A parent whose son plays basketball for Providence Cristo Rey High School vented out on social media about an upsetting event that went down yesterday during their game against Riverton-Parke Jr/Sr High School.
She has a 15-year-old sophomore who plays for Providence Cristo Rey High School. They traveled to play against Riverton-Parke Jr/Sr High School, and unfortunately, things got bad fast.
The game was played at Riverton Parke Jr/Sr High School, so Riverton Parke was the home team and Providence Cristo Rey was the visiting team.
According to the parent, during the game, the Riverton Parke players were using all kinds of racist names and slurs toward the Providence Cristo Rey boys. She said the referees heard it too, but didn’t do anything to stop it or call it out.
If not, things got even worse once the game ended.
One player from Riverton Parke wouldn’t shake hands with the Providence Cristo Rey players the way you’re supposed to after a game.
And when one of the Providence kids asked why, the guy started cursing and used the n-word right in his face.
The Providence Cristo Rey coach apparently brushed it off and acted like it was no big deal, so a parent had to step in to calm things down.
She then revealed that some Riverton Parke players and parents hung around in the gym instead of leaving.
Instead, they were pushing the visiting parents of Providence Cristo Rey to get out while their boys were still inside the locker room or gym area. It felt really unsafe to the parents, like the boys were being left behind in a bad spot on purpose.
When the Providence Cristo Rey parents finally went to grab their sons so everyone could leave together, they heard some people from the Riverton talking to one of the boys who was looking for his mom.
According to the mother, those people said things like “they’re waiting for you outside,” which came across as a threat. In fact, the same group had been threatening the boy’s mom, too.
Once everyone got to the parking lot, it turned into chaos.
A group of Riverton Parke players and parents gathered around one of the Providence Cristo Rey moms’ cars and wouldn’t let her pull out or leave. Her son was just trying to get to the car to be with her.
That’s when the situation completely flipped around, when a woman from the Riverton Parke side started yelling really loudly that the boy was attacking her son and threatening him, while it was the other way around.
The parent who posted this says that’s not what happened at all. She explained that their boys and parents were the ones surrounded and getting provoked.
According to the post, she further revealed that during all the shouting, more bad language and racist remarks came flying from the home side toward the Providence Cristo Rey group.
Then that same woman called the police and an ambulance, claiming one of the Providence kids had attacked her son.
The parent who wrote the post was so shaken up that she said she might have left some details out, but the main thing she wanted people to know is that their sons were not protected.
She feels like the Providence Cristo Rey coach let them down by not handling the situation and putting the team in a really hostile, racist environment they shouldn’t have been in.
