He was born to his parents, Scott McGuire and Robin McGuire, and has two brothers; an older brother named Cash McGuire and a younger brother named Shane McGuire.

McGuire comes from a family with an athletic background. His grandfather used to play baseball for the Duke University team. His older brother, Cash McGuire, plays as the second base for Seattle University.

Further, his younger brother, Shane McGuire, used to be a catcher at the University of San Diego. Currently, Shane is with the Oakland Athletics organization after his 2021 MLB Draft.

After high school, Reese played baseball for the San Diego Toreros baseball team in his collegiate days.

In the 2013 MLB Draft, Reese was a target for most of the teams. But it was the Pittsburgh Pirates that selected him in the 14th overall draft of the team. 

At first, Reese was assigned to the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League (GCL) and then promoted to the New York–Penn League. Not to mention, he also played for the South Atlantic League and Arizona Fall League.

In 2016, Reese signed to play with the Toronto Blue Jays, where he earned three consecutive Eastern League Player of the Week honors. Only in 2018 was he then promoted to the major league, but he had played for international leagues a lot. 

After years with the Jays, Reese made a deal with the Chicago White Sox on April 3, 2022.

Just a few months later, in August 2022, Boston Red Sox acquired Reese and a player to be named later from Chicago White Sox in exchange for Jake Diekman. 


In May 2017, McGuire struggled with a torn meniscus in his right knee and he went through arthroscopic surgery and was up for rehab.

Reese pled nolo contendere to the allegation and was later charged with disorderly conduct, a second-degree misdemeanor, in Dunedin, Florida.
