The Spotsylvania County, Virginia, community is mourning the loss of 18-year-old Michael Bosworth Jr. His passing has left a deep sadness in the hearts of his family, friends, and school.
A senior at Massaponax High School, Michael was known for his vibrant spirit, love for sports, and close bonds with his family, including his parents, Lilly Carlile and Michael Bosworth Sr., and his stepfather, Nate Carlile.
His tragic passing on May 3, 2025, during an incident on McKenzie Lane, has sparked grief and reflection among those who knew him.
Michael Bosworth Jr. was more than just a student; he was a beloved athlete who poured his heart into everything he did.
He wore the #58 jersey on the football field, landing both the offensive and defensive lines for the Massaponax Varsity Football team.
He showed strength and determination in lacrosse, where he wore the #1 jersey, and in wrestling, where he competed with hard work and passion.
His teammates admired his work ethic, and his coaches saw him as a leader who lifted those around him.
Off the field, Michael was a typical teenager with a big heart.
He loved spending time with his family, whether it was fishing by the lake, cheering at football games in the stadium, or just hanging out at home.
His infectious smile and easygoing nature made him a friend to many, and his presence lit up any room.
The Morning Of May 3, 2025, Was Supposed To Be A Joyful One For Michael
It was the day of the Massaponax High School prom, a milestone for the senior class set to graduate in just weeks.
But around 3 a.m., tragedy struck on McKenzie Lane in the River Club subdivision.
According to the Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office, a homeowner reported a burglary in progress and fired shots at three teenagers, including Michael, who was struck in the torso.
Despite being rushed to a local hospital, Michael succumbed to his injuries. A second teen was grazed by a bullet but survived with minor injuries, while the third was unharmed.
The incident has raised questions and heartache.
The two surviving teens told detectives they weren’t trying to break into the home to steal.
Instead, they said they were playing a prank—recording “ding-dong ditch” videos for TikTok, a game in which teens ring a doorbell and run away.
One teen even offered their phone to show a similar video filmed earlier that night.
The Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office is still investigating, and the commonwealth’s attorney is reviewing whether the homeowner’s actions were justified or if charges are warranted.
Michael Grew Up Surrounded By A Loving Family
His mother, Lilly Carlile, and father, Michael Bosworth Sr., raised him alongside his brother, Jason Bosworth.
Michael also shared a close bond with his stepfather, Nathaniel (Nate) Carlile, who had been a steady presence in his life.
Nate and Lilly, who have been married for 26 years, have built a big, blended family with five children and three grandchildren.
Michael was at the heart of it all, always eager to join in family outings or share a laugh with his siblings and step-siblings.
Nate and Michael’s relationship was special.
Despite being a stepfather, Nate treated Michael like his own, and the two connected over shared interests like sports and outdoor adventures.
A devoted mother, Lilly cherished watching Michael grow into a kind and driven young man.
Michael Bosworth Sr. was proud of his son’s athletic achievements and how he carried himself with respect and determination.
Together, this family gave Michael a foundation of love and support that shaped him into the person he was.
The news of Michael’s death shocked everyone at Massaponax HS and in the Spotsylvania community.
The school’s principal, Dr. William J. Lancaster III, shared the heartbreaking news with parents in a letter and offered counseling support for students and staff.
“s a parent/guardian, it is always difficult to know how to answer questions about grief and loss. Children respond to death differently, and their reactions will depend on the relationship they had with the person who died, their age, and prior experiences with loss,” the letter stated. “This evening, we plan to hold prom as scheduled. School counselors will be on-site at the event to provide support as needed. Additionally, when students return to school on Monday, our counseling staff and additional division support team members will be available to assist students and staff. If your child needs support, please contact the school so we can help. Our thoughts are with the family during this difficult time.”
