The Downers Grove South wrestling program and the Florida community are mourning the sudden loss of Will Schuessler, who passed away at the young age of 22 on August 18, 2025.
Will was a talented wrestler, dedicated aviator, and inspiring leader whose life touched many people.
William, aka Will Schuessler, was born in 2003 in Daytona Beach, Florida, where he built strong ties to his family and community.
He attended Downers Grove South High School, known as DGS, and there, he shone as a student and athlete.
Will started wrestling in elementary school after his father introduced him to the sport, which became a big part of his life. He also played on the DGS Boys Varsity Lacrosse team, and these activities helped shape his discipline and teamwork skills.
In his senior year, Will served as captain of the DGS wrestling team. He qualified for the IHSA State Tournament in 2022, showing his hard work and talent. Will graduated from high school that same year. He was ready for bigger challenges.
After High School, Will Pursued his Passion for Aviation and Service
He joined the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps (NROTC) to become an officer in the Marines or Navy, and his main goal was to become a pilot in the U.S. military. Wrestling had prepared him physically and mentally for this path.
Will enrolled at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida, in 2022. This school is one of the nation’s top places for aviation and aerospace education. Will thrived there.
He became a certified Part 107 drone operator. He saw drones as more than tools—they were ways to innovate in research, mapping, and creative projects.
Will’s achievements were impressive for his young age. He earned his private pilot license with instrument and commercial ratings.
He also got multi-engine licenses, became a Certified Flight Instructor (CFI), and a Certified Flight Instructor Instrument (CFII).
On top of that, he earned the title of United States Marine. Will was committed to his Civil Air Patrol duties, too. He loved it deeply.
Beyond his studies, Will explored new ideas and challenged himself in academics and hobbies.
He cherished time with family and friends. He was known for his technical skills, creativity, and passion.
People described Will as an incredible leader. He was a grateful son, an adoring brother, and a loyal friend.
He had a special ability to make everyone feel important when he was around. Will touched many lives and left a lasting impact. His positive energy lifted those near him.
A GoFundMe has been Set Up for Will’s Family, along with Tributes from those who knew him
Following the Will’s passing, a GoFundMe has been set up to support his family. Organized by Mia Norris, with co-organizers Carlos Henriquez Jr. and Nate Schuessler, the campaign aims to raise $35,000.
The page highlights Will’s successes in the flight program, NROTC, and his amazing character. It notes how loved he was by everyone he met. As of now, donations are helping the family during this tough time.
News of Will’s death brought an outpouring of condolences and memories. His DGS wrestling coach, Sean Christopher, shared a touching post on Facebook. He wrote-:
“We lost a special young man this past weekend. It’s hard to wrap my head around something like this and I am crushed for Will’s family. I hope they can find peace and comfort in knowing the profound impact that Will had on this world and others during his short time on earth. I am hurt, I am sad, and I am angry all at the same time. Getting to know Will Schuessler will be one of the blessings that I will hold on to for the rest of my life. In raising three boys of my own, I’ve always felt if my boys could have a fraction of the impact that Will had, they would be successful human beings. Will, I love you buddy. I’m gonna miss the hell out of you but I’m grateful that you were a part of my life. Until we meet again.”

The Embry-Riddle NROTC Battalion also expressed its grief. They posted,
“It is with a heavy heart that the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University NROTC Battalion shares the passing of Midshipman 1/C William Schuessler. He was a leader, mentor, aviator, and friend, who earned the title of United States Marine. Will was the epitome of what it means to be a Marine—mentally sharp, physically strong, and morally sound. He always led by example and never hesitated to put others before himself. More than that, he was full of confidence, joy, and compassion that lifted up everyone around him. He was a cornerstone of the Marine Option Company. I am a better person, officer, and leader because of him, and his impact on all of us will never be forgotten. We will miss you brother.”

A memorial service for Will was held on Thursday, August 21, 2025, at 5:00 PM in the College of Aviation Atrium at Embry-Riddle.
Air America Flight Center shared a video clip of Will and a sad message:
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of Will Schuessler. Will was not only a talented student, but also a great friend and an important part of our family as a flight instructor. His presence, kindness, and dedication will be profoundly missed. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time.”

Will Schuessler’s death leaves a void in many hearts. Yet, his legacy lives on through the lives he inspired.
He showed what dedication, kindness, and passion can achieve in a short time. Friends, family, coaches, and classmates will remember him fondly.
Rest in peace, Will. Your light will keep shining.
