Respected Coach and Basketball Legend Cynthia Cooper: The Story of Her Two Marriages

This article was last updated by on

Besides excelling in her professional career, Cynthia Cooper has also managed her married life with her husband, Brian Dyke, alongside being a great mother.

American basketball coach Cynthia Lynne Cooper-Dyke was born on April 14, 1963, and grew up in South Central Los Angeles.

The former player has won championships in college, the Olympics, and the WNBA.

Hailed as one of the greatest female basketball players, Cooper has coached at USC, UNC Wilmington, and Prairie View A&M.

However, her professional coaching career began with the Phoenix Mercury.

Cynthia Cooper Is The Mother Of Twin Children, Brian Jr. and Cyan!

Coach Cynthia Cooper has been married twice. Her first marriage was with Anthony Stewart in 1993, whereas she remarried in 2001 with Brian Dyke.

Despite Cooper’s well-documented professional life, she has been able to keep her personal life private.

There is not much known about her ex-husband, Anthony Stewart. However, we discovered that Cooper married Anthony in San Antonio, Texas.

Moreover, many details about Stewart’s first marriage remain a mystery, as she has never mentioned anything about her first marriage or her ex-husband.

Their marriage did not last that long, as the couple parted ways after a few years of their marriage.

After separating from Stewart, Cooper proceeded to marry Brian Dyke, who is a sports agent. After their marriage in 2001, the couple welcomed their twins, Brian Jr. and Cyan, on June 15, 2002.

Moreover, the couple had their twin babies through surrogacy. As per this ESPN article, at that time, Cooper was juggling countless responsibilities.

She was trying to find the right balance between her married life, the recent birth of her twins via a surrogate mother, and as coach of the Mercury.

Therefore, Stewart resigned from the Phoenix Mercury after the birth of her twins, and her resignation statement was:

“I decided the best thing for me, my family and the organization as a whole was for me to step down.”

Her abrupt departure from the Mercury disappointed many, but Stewart gave her priority to her family and motherhood.

Cynthia has never really opened up about her current husband Brian. However, we can make a guess that both of them share a great equation with each other.

Stewart has kept her husband’s surname Dyke. Similarly, she has posted a picture flaunting a Jersey that has Cooper-Dyke written on it.

While she has never shared pictures of herself with her husband, Stewart’s Instagram is filled with pictures of her children, colleagues, and other professional staff.

Brian is completely absent from social media and the public eye. Even after thorough research, we couldn’t find any relevant information about him.

Since both of them work in the sports industry, their shared interest and experiences have definitely helped to build a strong foundation for their marriage.

In Case You Didn’t Know

  • When Cynthia Cooper was only six years old, her father, Kenny Cooper, left the family, leaving her mother to raise eight children.
  • In 2000, Cooper published her autobiography, She Got Game: My Personal Odyssey, in which she opened up about her childhood, her basketball career, and her mother’s breast cancer.
  • In 2009, she was inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame and into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2010.
