Greg King, a retired coach and teacher at Norwood High School, passed away, leaving behind his close-knit family.

He was an avid sports lover who had coached for over 46 years. He coached basketball and football.

After a legendary 46-year career in education, coaching, and athletic administration, Greg King was honored with induction into the National High School Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

His journey began in 1976 in his hometown of Walsenburg, Colorado, before he went on to make an impact at six different schools. However, it was at Stratton High School where he solidified his legacy as one of Colorado’s greatest coaches.

During his eight-year tenure, King led the Stratton Eagles to five state football championships, while guiding the team to an incredible 48-game winning streak.

Moreover, his success wasn’t limited to football. He also coached the Stratton boys’ basketball team to two state titles, demonstrating his ability to develop championship programs across multiple sports.

Beyond coaching, King served as an athletic director at multiple schools, including Del Norte, Grand Junction, La Veta, Sargent, and Alamosa High School.

Greg’s key was preparation; he looked at a lot of film, and went scouting. He had practice plans that covered individual skills, team skills, and situations, so when we got in a game there were very little surprises if any.
