Andre Agassi is one of the greatest tennis players in history, and his parents, Mike and Betty Agassi, played a big role in shaping his life and career.
The celebrated tennis player Andre Agassi was born on April 29, 1970, in Las Vegas, Nevada, to Emmanuel “Mike” Agassi and Elizabeth “Betty” Agassi.
His father, Mike, originally named Emanoul Aghassian, was born in Iran to Armenian parents. His mother, Betty, born Elizabeth Dudley, is American.
Mike and Betty’s love story began in Chicago. Reportedly, they crossed paths through a mutual friend, and after dating for just two months, they married on August 19, 1959, at a Methodist church in Chicago’s North Side.
Their quick romance led to a long-term partnership that lasted decades. In 1962, they moved to Las Vegas with their young daughter, Rita, and newborn son, Phillip, where they raised their family and supported Andre’s tennis career.

Unlike his father, Mike, who was in the media given his career as an amateur boxer, his mother, Betty, remained away from the spotlight.
Betty Agassi was a supportive mother and homemaker who stood by her family through their tennis journeys, regardless.
She faced health challenges, surviving breast cancer, and later shared her experience to help other women. In 2002, she appeared with Andre in a “Got Milk?” advertisement, showing her support for his career in a fun way.
Andre Agassi Has Been Vocal About The Strict Coaching Of His Father, Mike Agassi, An Amateur Boxer!
Mike Agassi, Andre Agassi’s father, had a varied and interesting career. Born as Emanoul Aghassian in Iran to Armenian parents, he was an amateur boxer who competed for Iran in the 1948 and 1952 Summer Olympics.
After moving to the United States in 1952, he became an American citizen and won the Chicago Golden Gloves boxing competition three times.
In Las Vegas, he worked in casinos, serving as a maitre d’ at hotels like the Tropicana and MGM Grand. Mike was also a tennis coach, especially for his children, building a tennis court at home and creating a ball machine called “The Dragon” to train Andre.

His tough coaching helped Andre become a tennis legend, and Mike was inducted into the Nevada Tennis Hall of Fame in 2008 for his contributions to the sport.
Andre has been open about his tough childhood under Mike’s strict coaching. He wrote that Mike made him hit 5,000 balls a day and sent him to Nick Bollettieri’s Tennis Academy at age 13, which Andre found difficult.
Despite this, Andre later understood Mike’s intentions, saying,
“My father is incredibly loyal. I wish he had loved me less.”
In a 2010 interview, Andre called Mike “generous” and said he was chasing the “American dream” for his family.
Likewise, in a 2009 interview with SPIEGEL, Andre shared that their relationship grew warmer over time.
He said, “We never said ‘I love you… Today, we do all these things,” showing how they learned to express affection.
Agassi also noted that Mike was proud of his efforts, never feeling the need to apologize for his tough methods.
