Hailed as Mr. Consistent by his former coaches, Burkhead, though a backup player for most of his career, left a vital impact on the team he played for. With teammate Tom Brady, Burkhead won the Super Bowl in 2019, scoring three touchdowns in the postseason.

On Monday, Burkhead announced his retirement via an Instagram post. In his four years with the Patriots, Burkhead appeared in 41 regular-season games and amassed 390 total touches for 2,128 yards and 21 touchdowns.

Rex Burkhead Net Worth Before Retirement

The former Houston Texans’ running back Rex Burkhead has a net worth of $8 million. Burkhead has built most of his wealth through his ten seasons as an NFL player.

Burkhead grew up in the Dallas-Fort Worth area of Texas. Rex came from a family that loved football, with his father, Richard, previously even trying out for a couple of NFL teams.

With Rex making it to the NFL, Richard saw his dreams live out through his son’s eyes. The footballer didn’t come from an aristocratic family and built his wealth with sheer on-field talent.

A sixth-round pick, Burkhead didn’t have the flashy rookie contract. He signed a four-year, $2.2 million deal with the Bengals, including a $102,200 signing bonus with an average annual salary of $565,000.

Burkhead mostly played as a backup but managed to stick with the roster for four years. In 2017, Burkhead ended his association with the Bengals, having played 42 NFL games with one start.

He had 87 rushing attempts for 375 yards, three touchdowns, and 34 receptions for 288 yards with one touchdown. The New England Patriots signed Burkhead as an unrestrictive free agent for a $3.1 million contract and reached the Super Bowl for the first time in his career.

The Patriots lost, but Burkhead would extend his contract with the Patriots, and the very next season, the team not only reached the Super Bowl but also won the competition. Burkhead had extended his contract with the Patriots for three years at $9.75 million.

But in his final season, Rex’s contract had to be restructured, with his salary dropping from $2.5 million to $1.05 million. In 2021, the running back signed a one-year deal with the Texans for $1.5 million.

His contract was extended through the 2022 season, but details weren’t stated.

Rex Burkhead’s Fight Against Cancer

The former NFL player Rex Burkhead has been part of the Team Jack Foundation for several years. The Team Jack Foundation raises funds and awareness for pediatric brain cancer.

The founder of the non-profit organization, Andy Hoffman, met Rex when the former Texans player played for the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Andy’s son, Jack Hoffman, was diagnosed with pediatric brain cancer and epilepsy when he was five years old.

It was after his son’s diagnosis that Andy started the foundation in 2013. In 2020, Andy was diagnosed with brain cancer, and he passed away a year later.

That same year, Rex once again represented the foundation in the NFL’s My Cause My Cleats program, which he had been doing since 2016. In 2022, his cleats celebrated the tenth anniversary of the foundation.

On his Instagram, Rex has shared several posts about the Team Jack Foundation and has helped raise awareness about the cause.
