Rolando Blackman | Early Life, Family, and Education

Rolando Antonio Blackman was born on February 26, 1959, in Panama City, Panama. Unfortunately, Blackman is quite private with life and hasn’t revealed any information regarding his childhood, parents, and more. 

As a matter of fact, Blackman moved to Brooklyn, New York, at the age of eight alongside his family. Thus, he grew up in that location for most of his childhood. 

Advancing his academics, Blackman initially attended the William E. Grady CTE High School. Like every athlete, he started playing basketball in his early days.

NBA Career

After graduating college, Rolando Blackman entered the 1981 NBA Draft. Dallas Mavericks drafted him the 9th overall in the first round back then.

Therefore, he became the foremost Panamanian-born player in the NBA. Besides that, his defense was commendable and is what made him distinct throughout his career.

Blackman spent more than a decade with the Dallas Mavericks and gave an amazing start for the team with 13.3 points per average. Furthermore, even as a rookie, he featured a good amount of time with an average of 24 minutes per game.

Following it, Dallas Mavericks traded Blackman to the New York Knicks on June 24, 1992. Indeed, his tenure with the team was short-lived for just two years. 

His best performance was titled in the 1993 Eastern Conference Semi-finals against the Charlotte Hornets alongside the team. Later, the team waived Blackman on July 6, 1994.

Later, he signed a deal to play with the Greek League team AEK Athens BC, where he starred under coach Vlade Đurović. Likewise, he also played for the Olimpia Milano and played under the head coach Bogdan Tanjević.

Similarly, he played for many Italian teams like Dejan Bodiroga, Gregor Fučka, Nando Gentile, Limoges CSP, and Alessandro De Pol. 

During his gameplay, Rolando bagged the Italian League title and the Italian Basketball Cup. Additionally, he also claimed the MVP of the Italian Cup series. 


Apart from being a player, Rolando Blackman indulged himself as a coach the defensive coordinator in 2000. Back then, he worked with the Mavericks under coach Don Nelson.

Afterward, he starred in the German National team as an assistant coach. Additionally, he contributed to the team’s bronze medal at the 2002 World Basketball Championships in Indianapolis.

Back as a Kansas State player, he featured in jersey number 25. On February 17, 2007, Kansas State retired his jersey at halftime during a game against Iowa State.
