Roman Wilson is an emerging NFL wide receiver whose story spans oceans and cultures. Born in Kihei, Hawaii, Roman’s father, Jeffrey Wilson, is African-American, while his mother, Colleen Colegrove, is of Irish-German descent.

Growing up in Hawaii, Roman’s upbringing was deeply influenced by his multicultural family heritage.

Now a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers, the 24-year-old wideout has transitioned from collegiate stardom to making his professional debut, carrying the pride of his unique background with him.

Early Life And Hawaii Upbringing

Roman Wilson was born on June 19, 2001, in Kihei, Hawaii, to parents Jeffery Wilson and Colleen (Colegrove) Wilson. His mother hails from St. Ignace, Michigan, and his father from Kalamazoo – a Midwestern love story that led the couple to settle in the Hawaiian Islands.

Growing up in a multicultural state like Hawaii, with one parent African-American and the other of Irish-German descent, gave Roman a rich cultural perspective from the start.

From a young age, Wilson displayed uncommon dedication to his sport and education. Living on the island of Maui, he would wake up at 4:00 a.m. each morning to catch a plane to Oʻahu just to attend the famed Saint Louis School in Honolulu.

Saint Louis is known for its powerhouse football program, and Wilson’s daily inter-island commute underscores how committed his family was to providing him the best opportunities.

His father even took a job with an airline, and his mother worked three jobs to help afford the costs of this schooling plan. “I just want to continue making them proud… my family has done so much for me,” Wilson said of his parents’ sacrifices, vowing that he hopes to repay them someday.

That tireless support and Wilson’s own drive soon paid off. At Saint Louis, he became a star receiver, helping the team achieve a 38-game winning streak and win four consecutive state championships.

His remarkable speed, agility, and playmaking abilities caught the attention of college recruiters, eventually leading him to the University of Michigan.

College Stardom At Michigan

Wilson’s journey then came full circle to his parents’ home state. He accepted a scholarship to the University of Michigan, the very place his mom and dad first met decades earlier.

Arriving in Ann Arbor in 2020, the Hawaiʻi-raised receiver quickly made his mark as a dynamic deep threat for the Michigan Wolverines.

Over the course of his college career, he earned multiple accolades and was widely regarded as one of the top wide receiver prospects for the 2024 NFL Draft.

At Michigan, Roman’s career took off as he became a standout wide receiver for the Wolverines, making key contributions to the team’s offense.

Over the course of his college career, he earned multiple accolades and was widely regarded as one of the top wide receiver prospects for the 2024 NFL Draft. In his senior campaign, Wilson led the team in receiving with 789 yards and showcased a knack for coming through in big games.

He hauled in 61 catches for over 1,000 yards during the 2023 season, including clutch performances in postseason play. Wilson and the Wolverines triumphed in the 2022 Fiesta Bowl and the 2024 Rose Bowl, among other major victories.

His efforts earned him second-team All-Big Ten honors in 2023. By the time he declared for the NFL draft, Wilson had proven himself as a speedy playmaker with a champion’s résumé – a hometown Hawaiʻi hero turned Michigan standout on the national stage.

NFL Journey And Debut

That impressive college run led Roman Wilson to the NFL. The Pittsburgh Steelers selected him in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft, with the 84th overall pick, seeing in Wilson a receiver who could stretch the field and bring big-play ability to the pros.

Upon joining the Steelers, Wilson soon encountered the next challenge: the physical rigors of NFL life. An ankle injury in his first padded training camp practice sidelined him early, delaying his introduction to game action. Yet Wilson remained undeterred and worked his way back onto the field by mid-season.

He made his NFL debut in Week 6 of the 2024 season during a road game against the Las Vegas Raiders. In that October matchup, Wilson appeared in a handful of snaps, officially marking the start of his professional career.

While he did not record a catch in his debut and was soon placed on injured reserve again with a subsequent hamstring setback, the moment was a milestone – a testament to how far he had come from those early morning flights in Hawaii to the bright lights of the NFL.

With his rookie year behind him, Wilson has been rehabbing and honing his craft, eager to stay healthy and contribute.

Steelers coaches have noted his determination to improve every day, and optimism remains high that his blend of speed and work ethic will translate into on-field production as he enters his second season.

In Case You Didn’t Know

  • Roman Wilson set the “Fastest Man” record at a Nike regional camp in 2019, running the 40-yard dash in 4.37 seconds.
  • His father, Jeffery Wilson, was an amateur boxer during his college years, and his mother, Colleen Colegrove, was a Division I track athlete.
  • Roman Wilson had a standout college career at Michigan, earning 107 receptions, 1,707 receiving yards, and 20 touchdown catches, making him one of Michigan’s top receiving threats in recent years.
