Marty Blakey, a 19-year-old, is facing a courageous battle with cancer that has turned his promising life upside down.

On Friday, September 5th, 2025, Blakey was rushed to the ER after experiencing trouble breathing and noticeable swelling in his arm.

Doctors quickly discovered a large mass in his chest and expressed concern that it could be cancerous.

Marty had recently moved to San Antonio, Texas, to play college basketball, while his mother, Amanda, remained at their home in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Upon hearing the news, Amanda immediately drove to San Antonio to be by her son’s side during this frightening time.

Since her arrival, testing has confirmed that Marty is battling T-Cell Lymphoma.

As of September 12, he has undergone two biopsies, a spinal tap, and bone marrow testing to determine the stage and severity of the cancer.

A close family friend, Amanda Ronnenberg, is organizing a fundraiser to support Marty and his mother during this difficult period.

Once doctors fully understand Marty’s condition, it is hoped that he and Amanda will be medically transported back to Iowa, where he can receive treatment at the University of Iowa Hospital.

Amanda has been unable to work this week and will likely remain unable to do so for the foreseeable future, adding to the stress of this already challenging situation.

The message shared for the fundraiser states:

They are currently hundreds of miles away from home and expect the financial burden of this medical journey to grow considerably. It would mean the world to them, and their friends and family, if you are able to donate to ensure Amanda can provide the care Marty is going to need for the next few months and beyond. All donations will be used for living expenses while in Texas, monthly bills, medical care, and transport between home and the hospital.

So far, out of the $15,000 goal, $1,300 has been raised.

Marty’s Current Treatment and Road to Recovery

According to the latest update, Marty has been moved to a different floor of the hospital to receive more targeted care.

A recent chest X-ray revealed fluid around his lungs, prompting a procedure to drain it and hopefully relieve some of the chest pressure.

Doctors also plan to administer a pre-chemo treatment aimed at slowing any further tumor growth while finalizing his official treatment plan.

Despite the uncertainty, Marty and Amanda remain hopeful, leaning on the support of friends, family, and their community.

With continued medical care, love, and financial assistance, there is optimism that Marty can focus on recovery and eventually return to the sport he loves.

Wishing you a speedy recovery, Marty!
