Devin Vassell’s parents, Andrew Vassell and Cynthia Vassell, are his biggest fans in the world, and they have been there for him every step of the way.

He is an American professional basketball player for the San Antonio Spurs of the NBA.

Devin began playing basketball at Peachtree Ridge High School, and the Gwinnett Daily Post named him the regional Player of the Year.

He committed to play college basketball at Florida State, where he was named the Most Outstanding Player of the 2019 Emerald Coast Classic.

Later, he announced that he would enter the 2020 NBA draft, and the San Antonio Spurs selected him with the 11th overall pick.

On December 23, 2020, Devin debuted in the NBA and recorded three points and three rebounds in a winning game over the Memphis Grizzlies.

He agreed to a five–year, $146 million contract extension with the Spurs on October 2, 2023.

Happy Juneteenth! It’s my goal to continue building & being a part of this incredible community in San Antonio 🙏🏾

Devin Vassell’s Parents are the Supportive Pillars

Devin Anthony Vassell, the son of Andrew Vassell and Cynthia Vassell, was born on August 23, 2000, in Lawrenceville, Georgia.

His parents raised him in a close-knit family alongside his brother, Andrew Vassell, and sister, Danielle Brooks.

Devin has a strong support system rooted in his parents.

Andrew Vassell, a Jamaican descendant, hailing from Runaway Bay, played college basketball at Stony Brook, and Cynthia Vassell is a former nurse.

Andrew laid the foundation for Devin’s career from the very beginning. Cynthia says he was planning for a basketball player before Devin was even born.

Andrew gifted his son a basketball at birth and a small hoop for his first birthday.

His older brother played basketball, so he was a gym baby. He waddled himself over to that hoop, and to our surprise, he dunked the ball in the basket.

Cynthia Vassell

Andrew and Cynthia are supportive parents who relocated from their home in Atlanta, Georgia, to San Antonio, Texas, following the 2020 NBA Draft.

Devin fondly remembers long evenings at local parks, practicing with his dad, who would rebound for him until the sun went down.

The dedication of his father on the court and the support of his mother were the perfect combination to help Devin Vassell succeed.

Andrew works at CarMax, and Cynthia handles Devin’s day-to-day affairs.

They were overwhelmed and overcome by how blessed they are during Devin’s contract extension moment.

“We haven’t really had the opportunity to recognize it for what it is. We woke up this morning with tears flowing and just taking time to thank God.

Devin Vassell Eager to Play for Jamaica

San Antonio Spurs guard Devin Vassell has announced his strong desire to represent Jamaica in international basketball.

He made the statement while hosting a basketball clinic at Herbert Morrison Technical High School, where he also donated gear to local student athletes from across western Jamaica.

I’m 100 percent willing to play for the national team. I definitely want to play. I’ll be reaching out to some of the other guys who have Jamaican ties to see if they’re interested as well. I can’t speak for them, but I can speak for myself—I want to represent Jamaica.

Devin Vassell

The Jamaica Basketball Association (JaBA) is thrilled with Devin’s commitment.

President Paulton Gordon called it a significant step in connecting with talented players abroad to build a stronger national team. This move is part of a larger push to assemble a competitive Jamaican squad for future tournaments.

Other NBA players like Scottie Barnes and Isaiah Stewart are also eligible, while Norman Powell and Josh Minott have already committed to playing.

We’re elated. It aligns perfectly with our goal to ensure that every player with Jamaican heritage has a clear path to represent the country. There’s a window for appeal through FIBA, based on a player’s connection to the country. We’re working that avenue to bring more elite players on board.
