Shoma Uno is a figure skater from Japan. He is the 2018 Olympic silver medalist, the 2019 Four Continents Champion, and a four-time Grand Prix Final medallist (2015–2018).
In addition, he is also the 2017 Asian Winter Games champion and a four-time Japanese national champion (2016–2019).
Further, earlier in his career, he won the 2015 World Junior Championship, the 2014–15 Junior Grand Prix Final, and the 2012 Youth Olympic silver medal.
Uno is the first skater to land a quadruple flip in an international competition. He also holds the record for the best score ever achieved by a junior in the short program.
Uno, competing in his first senior Grand Prix, earned silver after coming first in the free program and fourth in the short program at 2015 Skate America, ending only 1.52 points behind gold medalist Max Aaron.
At the 2015 Four Continents, Uno made his senior ISU Championship debut, placing fifth in the free skate and second in the short program.

Shoma Uno: Early Life
Shoma was born and raised in Nagoya, Japan, and retains Japanese citizenship. Itsuki, his younger brother, is his only sibling.
When he was five years old, Uno began skating after meeting Mao Asada at a skating rink.
Daisuke Takahashi is his idol in figure skating. Fujio Uno, his grandfather, is an oil painter.
Uno earned bronze at the 2009–2010 Japan Junior Championships but did not finish on the podium in the next two years.
Uno debuted in the Junior Grand Prix (JGP) in 2011–2012, capturing a bronze medal at the JGP Tallinn Cup in Estonia after finishing fourth at the event in Poland.
He bagged silver in the individual event and gold in the 2012 Winter Youth Olympics team event. At the 2012 World Junior Championships, the skater came in 10th place.

Professional Career
In Slovenia, Uno finished sixth in his Junior Grand Prix. With personal bests in both games and a score of 188.48 points, he won silver at his next JGP event in Germany.
At the 2013 World Junior Championships, the skater came in seventh place.
Uno finished third in his third JGP season, claiming bronze in Riga, Latvia, and fourth in Tallinn, Estonia.
He finished fifth at the 2014 World Junior Championships, and at the 2014 Gardena Spring Trophy, he won his first international senior championship.
At the 2014 Asian Trophy, Uno won the season’s second senior international competition. He was tasked with participating in JGP competitions in both Japan and Croatia.
He finished second in Japan and first in Croatia with new personal best scores, qualifying for his first JGP Final. At the 2014–15 Japan Junior Championships, he earned his first national title as a junior.

Records & Achievements
After falling on the quadruple toe loop and the combo in the Grand Prix Final in December 2016, Uno finished fourth in the short program with 86.82 points.
He returned strong in the free skate, finishing second with a personal best of 195.69 points.
He finished third overall for the second year in a row and earned the bronze medal, barely 0.34 points behind silver medalist Nathan Chen and 11.39 points behind gold champion Yuzuru Hanyu.
Later that month, the figure skater won his first national title in Osaka, Japan.
At the Four Continents Championships in February, he became the fourth athlete to break the hundred-point barrier in the short program with a score of 100.28.
He nailed four quad jumps in the free skate, including his first quad loop in international competition and a quad flip, although he missed both of his triple axel combinations.
He finished second in the short program, third in the free skate, and won bronze behind Nathan Chen and Yuzuru Hanyu with a score of 288.05.
Shoma Uno: Struggles
The 2019 CS Finlandia Trophy was Uno’s first tournament of the season. He finished second in the short program, just ahead of countryman Sta Yamamoto, but won the gold medal in the free skate.
Uno finished fourth in the short program at the 2019 Internationaux de France after failing on both his quad-toe loop and triple Axel effort that was supposed to be in combination.
The athlete fell three times in the free skate and made errors on two other quad jump attempts, placing him ninth in the free skate and eighth overall. This was his lowest performance in a senior international competition to date.
“It wasn’t a terrific outcome,” Uno remarked, “but I believe I’ll be able to leap a quad flip by the end of the season.”
Before the Japanese championships, he indicated that he would train more in Switzerland.
Uno declared shortly before the 2019–20 Japan Figure Skating Championships that he would train full-time under Lambiel.
In the short program, he finished second behind Yuzuru Hanyu, who was competing in his first Japanese championships since the 2016–17 season.
Shoma then won the free skate and the gold medal overall, marking his first career win over Hanyu.
Injury
Uno had to abandon practice at the 2018 World Figure Skating Championships in Milan after only a few minutes on the ice and was carried to a bus on the back of a staff member.
No significant damage was discovered during the examination; his skates were the source of his discomfort.
On the other hand, Uno decided to compete in the competition. His performance, along with that of Kazuki Tomono, earned the Japanese men three spots in the 2019 World Figure Skating Championships held in Saitama, Japan.
Uno earned the gold medal at 2017 Skate Canada, taking first place in both parts to kick off his Grand Prix Series season.
Unfortunately, Uno developed a 39-degree high temperature after returning from the competition on October 31 and was diagnosed with influenza.
He finished second overall behind Javier Fernandez at the 2017 Internationaux de France, where he placed second in the short program and won the free skate.
His performance qualified him for his third straight senior Grand Prix Final, where he finished second to Nathan Chen by 0.5 points.
