Rick Bayless, the brother of Skip Bayless, is a highly praised American chef and restaurateur.

Rick is well-known for his exceptional skills in blending traditional Mexican cuisine with modern interpretations, which has earned him immense popularity.

He gained widespread recognition through his popular PBS series “Mexico: One Plate at a Time.”

Bayless has received several awards, including a Michelin star, the title of Top Chef Masters, and an impressive seven James Beard Awards, throughout his career.

Rick continued with his family’s business while his older brother Skip Bayless pursued a career in sports.

Skip’s passion for sports started at a young age when he played basketball and baseball.

He is now known as an American sports columnist, commentator, and TV personality.

He gained recognition for his role as a commentator on the ESPN2 show First Take alongside Stephen A. Smith.

In June 2016, Bayless parted ways with ESPN, and he eventually launched his new show, Skip and Shannon: Undisputed, on Fox Sports 1, which he co-hosts with Shannon Sharpe.

Skip Bayles’s brother Rick Bayless is a famous chef widely known for his PBS series Mexico: One Plate at a Time. 

Rick was born on November  23, 1953, in a family of restaurateurs and grocers specializing in local barbecue.

As he worked in a family restaurant, his interest in food grew even more, and he later opened his own restaurant.

Before pursuing his career in food and culinary, he did his undergraduate course at the University of Oklahoma in Spanish and Latin American culture.

He also completed his master’s degree in linguistics at the University of Michigan.

He almost completed his Ph.D. but decided to leave his studies to concentrate on his cooking career.

Rick started his professional career as a chef in 1980 in Cleveland Heights, Ohio.

Seven years later, Bayless and his wife opened their own restaurant Frontera Grill in Chicago.

Their restaurant was specialized in contemporary regional Mexican cuisine, with a special focus on the varied cuisines of the Oaxaca region.

Rick Is A TV Host And Author

As a chef, Rick hosted the PBS television series Cooking Mexican for two years before dedicating his six years to culinary research in Mexico.

He published his first book, “Authentic Mexican: Regional Cooking from the Heart of Mexico,” in 1987, which received great praise from Craig Claiborne.

Bayless has authored several books on food and cooking recipes throughout his career.

In 2003, PBS started airing his show, “Mexico: One Plate at a Time,” which has earned multiple Daytime Emmy nominations.

Bayless himself has been nominated twice for Outstanding Lifestyle/Culinary Host for his work on the show – first in 2012 and again in 2017.

Rick Followed His Parent’s Footsteps

Skip and Rick were born and raised in Oklahoma City. Their parents, John Sr. and Levita owned and operated the Hickory House restaurant in Oklahoma City, where both brothers worked during their youth.

The Hickory House restaurant specialized in barbecue, which later influenced Rick’s career path.

He embraced the family tradition and became a chef, restaurateur, and even television personality.

However, Skip, the elder brother, did not pursue a career in the food industry like him and became a sports columnist, commentator, and TV personality.
