Skipping Ohio Middle School Dances and Basketball to Keep My Autistic Sons Safe From Bullies: A Mom’s Heartbreak at Autism Center Education

Say no to Bullying

This article was last updated by on

A mother posted a heartfelt message on Facebook about the emotional compromise of choosing a specialized Autism Center over public school for her sons.

Kjersty Shellhaas recently shared an emotional post on Facebook after seeing photos of other children attending middle school dances.

She expressed joy at seeing kids dressed up and confident.

However, she admitted feeling sadness because her sixth-grade son, Kyler, who loves music, would have enjoyed such events.

She explained that she and her husband chose to send Kyler and his younger brother Brodie to an Autism Center instead of public school.

This decision was made early in their lives to protect them from bullying and ensure they received personalized education.

Mother’s Experience of Choosing an Autism Center Over Public School to Protect Her Sons From Bullying!

In her post, Kjersty highlighted that while the Autism Center isn’t perfect, it’s a much better fit for her boys.

Even though she chose the safest and most supportive school for her autistic sons, she still feels sad that they miss out on fun things like dances and basketball.

Kyler especially loves music and sports, so it’s hard for her to see other kids enjoying those moments while her boys can’t.

Still, she’s happy knowing they’re safe and learning important life skills at the Autism Center.

She concluded her post saying,

But yea if you read all of that, I just wanted to vent a little.

Many people responded with compassion and shared their own experiences.

One parent shared their perspective, highlighting their emotional connection and similar parenting challenges, saying:

My heart aches for you because I know that feeling of wishing your autistic child gets to experience these things like other kids do. You’re doing such a good job know what’s best for them and what works best for their learning. What school do you go through? If you don’t mind me asking. I have been searching every option for a school for Xander. I don’t want to send him to public school and tried online he couldn’t concentrate and was ahead of where he was suppose to be. He kept getting mad wanting to just get through it already but they couldn’t move him up I’m now looking into a private online school for gifted children.

Another shared their support by spotlighting Kjersty’s thoughtfulness, saying,

The fact that you’re worried about making the right choice already proves you’re an amazing mom and doing a fantastic job!!! I think you made the perfect choice for your boys. You can set up and host a dance at home and they’d love it, be comfortable in their own space with their parents and each other…

These comments highlighted their understanding, admiration, and encouragement for Kjersty’s parenting decisions.

Many people supported her online, saying she’s a great mom and made the right choice.
