Sonja Hilmer Wikipedia- Hilmer, 24, is an American figure skater and a five-time US Figure Skating gold medalist. Sonja grew up in South Salem, New York, and later shifted to Colorado at age 16.

Hilmer’s rise in the figure skating world hasn’t been rapid but has been slow and steady. It is something even she has acknowledged in her interviews.

Recently, Hilmer competed in the US Figure Skating National Championships and placed 12th with 164.89 points. Amber Glenn won the US figure skating title with 210.46 points, a decade after she reigned as the US Junior Champion.

After the competition, Sonja shared a post thanking her coaches, parents, and friends who trusted in her from the very beginning. Hilmer is also known for choreographing both for herself and for other skaters.

The US figure skater Sonja Hilmer, age 24, was born on June 13, 1999. Senja isn’t trans and identifies as the sex identified at birth-female. 

Senja is the only child of her parents, Michelle and Steven Hilmer. The figure skater’s dad, Steven Hilmer, is a California State University graduate and previously worked at Amdahl Corp in the mid-90s.

In 2000, Steven joined EMC as their senior presales system engineer and worked there for nine years. During the end of his tenure, Steven was already an advisory technology consultant. 

In 2009, Steven joined Sirius Computer Solutions as their Solutions Architect. He initially worked the first six years at Sirius Computer Solutions in their New York-based office and later, in 2015, shifted to Colorado Springs.

This is the same timeline Sonja shared in her interview when she talked about her career. In an interview with Figure Skaters Online, Sonja shared she moved to Colorado with her family for training at age 16. 

On Instagram, Sonja has shared several family photos, including posts on Father’s Day.

She previously shared a picture of them hiking and captioned the post, “Happy Father’s Day to my amazingly awesome and hardworking dad! I wouldn’t be where I am now without your support, knowledge, and corny jokes!”

Sonja has also shared photos with her mom, Michelle. In 2018, she shared a family photo of them rafting in the Colorado River.

Alongside her love for figure skating, Sonja is also an artist and has previously shared pictures of her drawings most of those drawings are of anime characters. 

Sonja Hilmer Career 

The 24-year-old figure skater has always been known for her unique style on the ice. Hilmer’s love for ice skating began at age three and a half.

She was drawn to the sport after seeing it in a Muppets book. When Hilmer moved to Colorado, she trained in Monument with Kori Ade and Rohene Ward and later with Doug Ladret and moved over to the Broadmoor Skating Club in Colorado Springs.

Currently, Hilmer is coached by Tammy Gambill, Eddie Shipstad, and Sandy Straub and represents the Centennial Skating Club. In 2022, Sonja competed in her first US Championship at age 23.

Later that year, Hilmer won a silver medal at her first international appearance at the Cranberry Cup. She also recorded a personal best total score of 177.72 at the Glacier Falls Summer Classic.

In the ISU CS US International FS Classic 2022, Sonja placed fifth and held the same position at last year’s Cranberry Cup. Sonja took home the seventh position at the Nebelhorn Trophy.

The skater is known for designing her costumes and choreographing her moves. As said by one of her fans in a Reddit comment section, she doesn’t have substantial funding from USFS.

On her Instagram, Sonja can be seen sharing several videos of her skating on ice. Previously, Sonja said her favorite part of being able to choreograph herself is that she gets to understand her body more, which she considers extremely important in athletics.
