Sonny Bill Williams’ sister, Niall Guthrie, followed in his footsteps as she left New Zealand Sevens to join NRLW. Niall also has a twin sister named Denise Williams, who lives away from the public spotlight.
The former New Zealander rugby player, Sonny Bill Williams, is known as one of the most successful cross-code converters, playing in rugby league and rugby union. He also made headlines in 2009 after converting to Islam.
Williams comes from a family full of athletes. His father, John Williams, a man of Samoan descent, is a former rugby player. Sonny and Niall’s older brother, John Arthur Williams, previously played the sport.
With Niall switching to NRLW, many expect her to light up the league. NRLW is expanding to ten teams from six in 2023, with the arrival of the North Queensland Cowboys, Wests Tigers, Canberra Raiders, and Cronulla Sharks.

Earlier this year, Niall ditched the New Zealand rugby sevens side and signed for the Gold Coast Titans, the NRLW side. She made 159 appearances for New Zealand in the sevens format and was also the former touch football captain for her country.
The new Gold Coast Titans’ Center tied the knot with her long-term partner Tamāli’i Guthrie in December 2022, and the couple shares two daughters. The couple’s first child, Tatum Lee, was born on May 30, 2012.
Their second daughter, Rema-Rae, was born on January 25, 2014. Tama and Niall were engaged for six years before they exchanged their wedding vows. The two met while working as posties in 2007.
After walking down the aisle, the couple also performed taualuga in honor of their Samoan heritage. The couple also hinted that there may be more kids in the future as Niall is in the twilight stage of her career.
Niall Guthrie Has A Twin Sister
The new NRLW star has a twin sister in Denise Williams. Unlike her twin sister, and her brother, Sonny, Denise isn’t a professional athlete.
Going through her Instagram, Denise shares two kids with her husband, who has kept himself away from social media. With her two kids, Denise has attended several of her sisters’ games.
On May 11, Denise shared a lengthy post after Niall announced she was switching to NRLW. Denise shared a series of pictures from Niall’s early days with the sevens’ side.
The three siblings also have an older brother named John Arthur Williams, a former rugby player. He played rugby league in both the NSW and Queensland Cup.
In 2011, the oldest of four siblings featured for the New Lynn Stags in the Auckland Rugby League’s Phelan Shield grand final.
Sonny Bill Williams Parents, Lee, And John Williams
Sonny Bill Williams’ parents Lee, and John Williams, come from different ethnicities. The former rugby league player’s father, John Williams, comes from a Samoan heritage, while his mother, Lee Williams, is Caucasian.
The New Zealander grew up in tough conditions as a kid. Sonny and his siblings were raised in public housing in Auckland, and they lived paycheck to paycheck.
John Williams is a former rugby league player but never reached the same heights as his son. Sonny’s maternal grandfather, Bill Woolsey, was an Auckland league icon and a noted boxer.
In an interview with The Sydney Morning Herald, Sonny said his grandfather’s funeral was massive, with hundreds lining up to pay their tribute.
During the conversation with SMH in 2004, Sonny also mentioned that his parents had already separated, with his father living in Australia.
In 2019, Sonny and his family made headlines as his mother, older brother, and former teammate, Ofa Tu’ungafasi, converted to Islam. The former rugby player converted from Christianity to Islam in 2008 after his move to France.
