A 20-year-old basketball player from Southeastern Illinois College, Mattix Sandifer, passed away in a car accident on the early morning of Friday, August 8, 2025.
Sandifer took his last breath in a tragic single-vehicle car accident on Illinois Route 34 near Galatia in Saline County that took place around 1:58 a.m.
The accident occurred just one mile west of Harco Road.
Mattix was one of three people in the vehicle when it crashed. While two others were injured and airlifted to a regional hospital, Mattix was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.
So far, the precise details of what caused the crash are unclear.
Mattix Sandifer was survived by his mother, Jessica Lynn Sandifer, his brother, and extended family.
His mother, Jessica, broke her silence following his untimely demise, sharing a heartfelt post on Facebook.
She invited friends and family to gather at a fire to share stories about Mattix’s impact, writing:
I need to smile and no one could make me smile like him. Please come tell me what you remember. Everyone young or old or just plain saddened ,bring a log and let’s keep the fireside tales going. Pop up after dark. We will greet you with a grin.

As a shooting guard and small forward for Gallatin County High School’s boys’ varsity team, Mattix Sandifer made a name for himself during his senior year in the 2023-2024 season.
His highlight videos, which racked up over 250 views, showed off his impressive three-point shots and versatile play against teams like Hardin County, Crab Orchard, Edwards County, Norris City-Omaha-Enfield, and Pope County.
After graduating from high school, Mattix joined the Southeastern Illinois College men’s basketball team, where he redshirted during the past season.
A 2024 graduate of Gallatin County High School, Mattix, was also a two-year member of the Southern Illinois Select Basketball team. He played on an AAU World Championship team in 2022 and a Reebok World Championship team in 2023.
One friend, Jacie Brugger, shared a memory of Mattix choosing to hang out with her instead of going to a post-prom party, showing how he always went out of his way to make others feel included.
Luis Rubio, a close friend and mentor, called Mattix his “little brother” and shared how they spent time together just the day before the accident. He wrote:
Mattix Sandifer I love you brother I’ll always love you like you the little brother you were to me in so many ways !! Just yesterday you was with me taking you out to eat, working out, rapping, always talking for hours together about so so much. We did everything together!! I couldn’t be more lost for words and my heart is broken to peace’s. Brother you were my best friend, my good to my by bad you heart was in the best places always.

Another friend, Sidney Griffin, remembered Mattix’s dreams of playing in the NBA, writing:
This isn’t the news I ever thought I’d get. We all knew you were meant for the NBA — the talent, the heart, the drive. I hope you’re up there playing the game you loved, smiling like always.

Julie Dale, who referred to herself as Mattix’s “Aunt Ju Ju,” wrote a moving tribute about his unforgettable presence, which reads:
This is just not right… It truly seems like a Bad dream you cant wake up from…. When all you want is to see Mattix walking across the street to get Sodas or a snack from Granny and Pappys Fridge or some Sherbet or just coming to talk and See you. Watching him play Ball…. He was truly One of the best in this world !! ~He will always be Our Star Basketball player
