Due to his surname “Mordecai,” NCAA football quarterback Tanner Mordecai often has to tackle the query if he is Jewish.

Tanner Mordecai (b. November 8, 1999) is an American football quarterback who plays at the collegiate level for the Wisconsin Badgers under head coach Luke Fickell.

He entered the transfer portal in December 2023 for his senior season at the Badgers, having played at Oklahoma Sooner (2018-20) and SMU Mustangs (2021-22).

While with the SMU Mustangs, he played under the head coach Rhett Lashlee in the 2022 New Mexico Bowl. However, they lost to BYU Cougars by 23-24.

His career-high average came in 2021 with 308 pass completions on 454 attempts and 3,628 yards for 39 touchdowns.

Is Tanner Mordecai Jewish? QB’s Religion

So far, the American collegiate quarterback has not talked about his religion. Reports of the history show that the surname “Mordecai” is Jewish.

In the book ‘Mordecai: An Early American Family’ by Emily Bingham, the author writes about early American history & the struggle of the Mordecai families to assimilate into American society as Jews.

Having said that, it necessarily doesn’t mean a pinpoint conclusion to Tanner’s religion.

On his mother’s Facebook post, she shares pictures of the family celebrating Christmas, posing ahead of the Christmas tree.

As reported, his older sister Taylor married in a traditional Christian wedding at a church.

Her husband, AJ (Tanner’s brother-in-law), is a devout Christian & is often seen wearing a necklace with a cross on his social media.

Due to this evidence, there are some claims that the Oklahoma alum Tanner Mordecai is Christian, given his family’s connection to Christmas & church.

Even if the football player remains mum about opening up about his religious beliefs, it is evident that his devotion to faith gives him motivation to hone himself.

What Is Tanner Mordecai’s Ethnicity? Nationality & Family

Born in Waco, Texas, the 26-year-old football player is an American by nationality.

Both sides of his family, his father’s & mother’s, are of white ethnicity. However, the specifics about his ancestral roots are yet to be determined.

Tanner’s late maternal grandfather was Ernest Slovak (b. February 26, 1943 – d. September 20, 2020), who grew up in Crowell, Texas. His funeral was held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church of the Assumption.

His grandpa’s surname, “Slovak,” allegedly originated from Slovakia.

Tanner is the youngest of three children of his parents. He has two elder sisters, Destinee (b. November 1987) and Taylor Mordecai Roland (b. April 2, 1997).

Destinee attended the University of Kentucky, where she played softball, from 2007 to 2010 before graduation. Later, she also obtained her degree from Texas A&M in 2019.

She has a son named Liam, however, details on her spouse are not out.

On the other hand, Tanner’s second-eldest sister, Taylor, is a 2019 graduate of Midwestern State University. Since June 13, 2020, she’s been married to AJ Roland, whom she met at her college.

The duo shares a daughter named Austyn, born in December 2022.
